WE LOVE OUR WORK.
The Track Maintenance Worker is responsible for assisting with the daily maintenance, preparation, and upkeep of the racing surface and surrounding track areas at Sam Houston Race Park. This position plays an important role in ensuring the track is safe, properly maintained, and prepared for training and live racing.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and able to perform physically demanding tasks as part of a team.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with daily preparation and maintenance of the racetrack and racing surface.
- Perform routine track maintenance, including dragging, watering, grading, leveling, and other assigned duties.
- Operate and assist with the operation of track maintenance equipment and vehicles as trained and authorized.
- Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the rail, track edges, pathways, and surrounding areas.
- Help prepare the track for morning training and live racing.
- Monitor the condition of the racing surface and report concerns or irregularities to the Track Superintendent or Supervisor.
- Assist with moving, setting up, and maintaining track equipment and materials.
- Perform general groundskeeping and maintenance duties around the racing and stable areas as assigned.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
- Follow all safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist with emergency or weather-related track preparation and cleanup as needed.
- Work collaboratively with Track Maintenance and Racing Operations teams.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications
- Previous experience in racetrack, groundskeeping, landscaping, agriculture, construction, or general maintenance is preferred but not required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in hot, cold, wet, and changing weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing as needed.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance are required.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and live racing days.
- Previous experience operating tractors, utility vehicles, tractors, drags, or other maintenance equipment is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
- Ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, and lift.
- Ability to safely operate or learn to operate maintenance equipment.
- Ability to work around horses, vehicles, machinery, and other racetrack operations.
