AI Engineer at Mawer Investment Management in Calgary, Alberta, CA

AI ENGINEER (PREVIOUSLY POSTED AS APPLIED AI PLATFORM ENGINEER) Be Boring. Make Money.™ is our investment approach, but we are anything but dull. We are a diverse, passionate team united by our commitment to provide our clients with financial peace of mind and our desire to create one of the best companies in the world. A career with us will be demanding; however, the experience will also be dynamic, supportive, intellectually stimulating, and above all, meaningful. We take pride in doing things a little differently than other investment firms. Innovative ideas, diverse opinions and experiences, and teamwork are expected and rewarded regardless of title or tenure. Dedicated to our people, we have consistently been recognized as a preferred employer, receiving awards such as Canada’s Top 100 Employers (2026), Alberta Top Employers (2026), and Canada’s Top Small & Medium Employer (2025). Full Time Location: Calgary, AB Vacancy Status: New Role The Opportunity Many companies are hiring people to use AI systems such as orchestrators and prompt engineers leveraging an AI system such as Claude Enterprise.  That's not this role.  This role is for the person keen on building those AI systems. We're building an enterprise AI platform from the ground up — a model-agnostic infrastructure layer connecting our firm's data, documents, and business logic to large language models in ways that are safe, reliable, and repeatable. It is our internal AI operating system which every team at Mawer will come to depend on. We have only recently released this internal AI operating system and are looking for help to continue to build it out. Duties and Responsibilities What You'll Build • Design the core platform — examples of specific work include building a “knowledge base” via LLM ingestion and retrieval within an asset manager context and expanding/honing the tools/capabilities available to our internal agents • Build the integration layer connecting LLMs to internal data, documents, APIs, and business workflows • Create reusable, Mawer-specific, patterns and templates to enable firm orchestrators • Define standards for reliability, security, observability, evaluation, and governance • Evaluate emerging frameworks and architectures, deciding what earns a place in our stack Who You Are You're a builder, not a consumer. You're excited by AI system design — the architecture, the trade-offs, the patterns — not just what AI can do when you point it at a problem. You want to understand how LLMs work at scale and how to make them dependable. You have relentless focus. You pick a hard problem and don't let go until it's solved. You stay in flow until the solution comes together. You operate with a start-up mindset inside a disciplined firm. You move fast, prototype ruthlessly, and iterate on feedback — but what ships to production is observable, secure, and maintainable. You're comfortable with ambiguity and turn early ideas into practical systems without waiting for a spec. You learn at speed. The AI landscape shifts weekly. You get ahead, experiment, and bring back what works. You can evaluate a new framework honestly and decide whether it belongs in our stack. You're a force multiplier. You build tooling, templates, and documentation that make everyone else better. You communicate clearly across technical and non-technical audiences. Desired Qualifications • Software engineering background — you've shipped production systems, not just prototypes • Comfortable building services, APIs, data pipelines, and internal tools • Exposure to LLM application patterns: RAG, vector databases, orchestration, agents, tool calling, embeddings, model evaluation • Experience with cloud platforms, containers, CI/CD, observability, or security practices • Financial services or investment management industry exposure We are keen to understand what you've built, why and how rather than your title, years of experience or toolkit.  Why Mawer? • Directly contribute to the firm’s growth as a global, independent investment manager. • Learn and work within a high-performing team that has consistently delivered exceptional long-term investment results and high levels of client satisfaction. • Be a part of a meritocracy in which the quality of ideas supersedes hierarchy; where every role is valued, and every voice heard. At Mawer, talented team members can progress quickly, regardless of tenure or experience. • Our unique culture, which is integral to who we are and (we think) a competitive advantage. Our culture is shaped by our core values (integrity, putting clients’ interests first, excellence, teamwork, and long-term thinking) and key behaviours (curiosity, candour, accountability, and appreciation), which are much more than words on a page. They guide the way we operate, make decisions, and communicate every day. • We offer a flexible work environment with a blended workplace approach tailored to the unique needs of each department and team. This allows employees to seamlessly combine in-person and remote work experiences, fostering collaboration, promoting work-life integration, and empowering our team members to thrive in a dynamic, interconnected professional setting.  Our Benefits and Perks Include: • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits • Unlimited vacation days • Retirement planning assistance, including RSP contributions • Annual learning stipend • Parental leave top-up • Significant community investment contribution via our Employee Matching Program To apply, please submit your resume, cover letter, and application by July 24, 2026, to: https://www.mawer.com/careers/ If you had previously applied on the Applied AI Platform Engineer posting, APPLI001284, we will automatically include your application with this posting. There is no need to reapply.  All candidates must be eligible to work in Canada. We believe experience comes in many forms and we’re committed to adding new perspectives to our team. If your experience is close to what we’ve outlined, we encourage you to apply. At Mawer, we are committed to fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion. We strive to attract, hire, develop, and retain the best people from a wide variety of backgrounds/experiences and create an environment where unique ideas and perspectives are heard and valued.
