In the San Francisco Bay Area, two KIPP elementary schools, seven KIPP middle schools, and three KIPP high schools are closing the achievement gap between low-income students and their more advantaged peers. These innovative, tuition-free, college-preparatory schools are located in the underserved neighborhoods of Bayview Hunters Point and the Western Addition in San Francisco, Redwood City, East San Jose, San Lorenzo, and West Oakland.

Individuals are paired with a high-performing KIPP teacher, who serves as a coach and a mentor, for the entire school year. Residents begin the school year as an observer, a tutor and a small-group instructor, gradually gaining more responsibilities inside and outside the classroom eventually to co-teach or lead teach a group of students in the spring. In partnership with Aspire’s Teaching Residency, KIPP Residents will attend an all-day seminar once a week to discuss coursework theories and classroom practices. They will also take online courses in education theory through University of the Pacific during the summer and school year.
