Job Description
The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. ESS will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science.
About the role:
ESS is coming ever closer to producing our first neutrons. Our ability to produce neutrons for scientific research is entirely dependent on the reliability and availability of our world leading proton accelerator. As we continue our journey towards full operations, we are now seeking an experienced and dynamic Electromechanical Technician to join our Electrical Power Systems (EPS) Group.
The Electrical Power Systems Group (EPS) is part of the ESS Accelerator Division and is responsible for the klystron modulators, RF Power Stations (RFPS), magnet power converters and ESS magnet systems installed in the Accelerator tunnel. The EPS Group has developed several cutting-edge technology solutions for Electrical Power Systems, and is also involved in ESS’ sustainability work, which includes participation in EU research programs aimed at sustainability initiatives.
As an Electromechanical Technician, you will be part of a specialist team responsible for:
- Performing assembly, testing, retrofitting, installation, operation and troubleshooting of klystron modulators, RF power stations, magnets, and power converters.
- Supporting the operation, commissioning and maintenance of EPS Group equipment.
- Contributing to the reliability and availability of the accelerator and proactively monitoring and assessing equipment performance.
What you’ll do:
As an Electromechanical Technician within the Electrical Power Systems group, your main tasks are to:
- Provide electromechanical technical support to the Electrical Power System Group in commissioning, operation, and maintenance activities of EPS Group Systems.
- Support with installation, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical and control systems associated with EPS Group Systems.
- Serve as EPS Group Electrical Safety Leader.
- Execute and lead installation activities, maintenance, corrective, upgrade and repair activities associated with the EPS equipment.
- Populate and maintain the relevant electrical documentation, procedures and test reports for the EPS equipment.
- Participate in development projects within the group and across the ESS accelerator.
- Establish and maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
ESS will be in operation around the clock, meaning these positions may in future require on-call duty and/or shift work. This will be compensated for according to our collective agreement.
Please note: At the present time, we will only process applications from internally employed ESS candidates.
About you:
We are looking for a well-qualified, hands-on, self-motivated person who is keen to support your colleagues, but who can also manage your own tasks. As a positive and proactive person, you are someone who demonstrates a willingness to learn and get involved. No two days at ESS are ever the same, so we need service-minded colleagues who are flexible, calm under pressure and who work safely to a very high level of quality.
The following skills and experience are required:
- Technical education in electrical engineering, electromechanics, automation, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of relevant professional work experience in electromechanical installation, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of complex electrical equipment.
- Proven, hands-on work experience with electrical power systems, power converters and electronics, control cabinets, and industrial electrical equipment.
- The proven ability to create and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, technical drawings, and equipment documentation.
- Experience with measurement and diagnostic equipment, such as multimeters, insulation testers, oscilloscopes, and other electrical test equipment.
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
It would be considered an advantage if you also have:
- Prior experience working with high-power electrical equipment and/or high-voltage systems.
- Any experience with industrial automation, PLC-controlled systems, or instrumentation.
- Fluency in Swedish, both written and spoken.
To apply:
A career at ESS gives you the opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science at a stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe. We offer market competitive, individualised compensation which is differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements as well as monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website, so submit your application as soon as you can.
This role may require additional background screening processes and health and safety checks, which will be performed during the recruitment process.
