XVII. College Admission

The coaching staff will work to qualify as many student-athletes as possible. Information about recentered SAT scores and clearinghouse registration is available upon request. If a college recruiter contacts an athlete he/she should notify his/her coach, guidance counselor, and the athletic department. All DCS schools will abide by the rules of the NCAA.

XVIII. Team Selection and Transfers

DCS student-athletes are encouraged to participate in as many sports as he/she can. Student-athletes may participate in more than one sport during a season with the approval of the coaches and the athletic director. Once an athlete begins the in-season training period of a sport, he/she should not quit while that sport is in season. If an athlete quits a sport they will be withheld from participation until that season is over (includes playoffs). Athletes may be allowed to transfer from one sport to another during a season with the mutual consent of both coaches and the athletic director.

Each coach has his/her policy on how he/she selects the team. Coaches will explain their policy to candidates before the season/practice begins. Skill Development sessions and open facilities (open to all, required for none) are allowed, but shall not be held during any tryout period of an in-season sport, during midterm exams, and the last 5 days of 1st semester and last 10 days of 2nd semester). XX. Substance Abuse (School Board Policy 6.11.6)

The NCHSAA and Davidson County Schools emphatically oppose the use of tobacco (including e-cigarettes/vapor cigarettes), alcohol and other drugs by student-athletes, coaches (including volunteer coaches) and officials.

School Board Policy 6.11.6.G

Participation in athletics and extra-curricular activities is a privilege, not a right. Students

who participate in athletics and/or extra-curricular activities choose to do so, and as a result, those students are expected to make many proper choices as they represent themselves, their families, their school, and their community at all times, not just on the field of competition. A student's eligibility to participate in athletics and extra-curricular activities is dependent upon compliance with all applicable Board policies, rules and regulations. Students, by virtue of their voluntary decision to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities, have a higher responsibility to refrain from drug and alcohol use. Any student who violates this policy on Narcotics, Alcoholic Beverages and Stimulant Drugs (Including Drug Paraphernalia) and Other Prohibited Substances and is subsequently suspended as prescribed by the Davidson County Board of Education will forfeit all rights to participate in the athletic program or extra-curricular activities program as set forth herein.

XXI. Expenses

Should student-athletes or guardian(s) choose to make purchases related to athletic participation e.g. (camps, trips, clothing, and equipment for personal use or any other purpose related to participation) the expenses will be the sole responsibility of that athlete and his/her guardian(s). DCS and/or the Coaching Staff will in no way to any degree cover or reimburse voluntary expenses at any time. Teams will have fundraising opportunities to cover expected expenses such as spirit wear, camps, and other items not available in the athletic budget Coaches will not require any student-athlete to pay fees. Camps will be treated the same as field trips.

XXII. Sportsmanship

The following policy statement from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) expresses the concept of sportsmanship as follows: Ethics, integrity, and respect are important values in our daily lives. In the playing arena, they are translated into the word sportsmanship. Good sportsmanship is a vital part of high school athletics and must be reflected in a commitment to emphasize those positive lifetime values taught by interscholastic athletics.

Students and spectators should….

• Realize you represent the school as a member of a team; therefore, you must be a true sportsman, encouraging through behavior the practice of good sportsmanship
• Recognize that good sportsmanship is more important than victory by approving and applauding good team play, individual skill, and outstanding examples of sportsmanship and fair play exhibited by either team
• Remember that the primary purpose of interscholastic athletics is to promote the physical, mental, moral, social, and emotional well-being of the players, through the medium of the contest
• Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat
• Respect the judgment and integrity of officials
• Fulfill the pledge you sign before each sports season

Athletes are expected to…..

• Exemplify high morals, good character, and fellowship
• Respect the integrity of others
• Abide by the rules of the game in spirit and intent
• Demonstrate a continuing interest in personal improvement
• Display good sportsmanship
• Respect the rights and possessions of teammates, coaches, administrators, and officials.

Anyone ejected from a contest may be subject to administrative discipline as well. Anyone ejected from a contest must meet with the head coach, athletic director, and Principal before continued participation in athletics within DCS**.**

XXIV. Partnering with Parents:

Parent/Coach Communication Plan

Parenting and coaching are both difficult vocations. By establishing an understanding of each position, we are better able to accept the actions of the other and provide a greater benefit to children. As student-athletes become involved in the athletic program within DCS, they will experience some of the most rewarding times of their lives. Possibly the most important ingredient to achieving this outcome is to ensure that lines of communication are developed to allow for free and easy resolution of questions before they become conflicts. It is important to understand that there also may be times when things do not go the way you or your child wishes. At these times a short discussion with the coach is encouraged.

The communication you should expect from your child’s coach:

• Philosophy

• Expectations and goals the coach has for your child and teammates

• Locations and times of all practices and contests

• Team requirements, i.e., practices, special equipment, off-season conditioning, etc.

• Emergency procedures in case of injury

• Code of conduct and/or discipline plan

• Changes in schedule due to weather etc.

• Lettering criteria

• Team selection process

Communication coaches expect from athletes and parents:

• Concerns expressed directly to the coach
• Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance
• Parent’s contact number, including an emergency number
• Notification of special medical conditions
• Notification of illness or injury as soon as possible

Appropriate concerns to discuss with the coach:

• The treatment of your child, mentally and/or physically

• Ways the parent(s) can help the student-athlete improve

• Concerns about your child’s behavior or performance

• Safety of your child

It is very difficult to accept your child’s not playing as much as you or they may like. Coaches are professionals. They make judgment decisions based on what they believe to be the best for all student-athletes involved. As you have seen from the list above, certain things can and should be discussed with your child’s coach. Other things, such as those listed below, must be left to the discretion of the coach.

Issues not appropriate to discuss with the coach:

• Playing time
• Team strategy
• Play calling
• Offensive/defensive philosophies
• Other student-athletes

Some situations may require a conference between the coach and player, or coach and parent. These are encouraged if necessary. All parties involved must have a clear understanding of the other position. When a conference is necessary, the following procedure should be followed to help resolve the issue or concern.

• Student-Athlete-Coach- open door policy for all coaches
• Parent-Coach- done by appointment

If the meeting with the coach did not provide a satisfactory resolution:

• Call and schedule an appointment with the school athletic director.
• Call the school principal to discuss the situation.
• Contact the DCS athletic director only after going through the school athletic

director and principal first.

Communication methods used by coaches to student-athletes are school email to student email or by using the messaging feature in SportsYou. Coaches can use personal email to communicate with parents of student-athletes.

Examples of unapproved methods to communicate with student-athletes

• Any social media platform such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc
• Any group messaging platform other SportsYou such as Band App, Remind, Groupme, Team reach, etc
• Coaches use personal email to student-athletes schools or personal email

XXV. Discipline

School Based (School Board Policy 6.11.1)

When serving a school-imposed suspension, (ISS or OSS) the student-athlete will be ineligible for all contests, tryouts, and practices during the suspension period. This means the student-athlete cannot participate (dress out or attend) during the suspension.

When serving an athletic suspension, the athlete is expected to demonstrate support for HIS/HER teammates**.** Failure to adhere to these expectations may extend his suspension and/or affect his recognition at the conclusion of the season.

Team Based Discipline

The coach may immediately suspend a player for twenty-four hours and at the end of that time suspend them for an additional period not to exceed one week (7 days). Any suspension period of more than one week shall be determined by a meeting of the athlete’s coach or coaches, and the Athletic Director.

Individual Coaches Rules

Coaches may establish additional rules and regulations with the approval of the athletic director and principal for their respective sports. These rules about a particular sport must be given by the coach in writing to all team members and explained fully at the start of the season. Penalties for violation of team rules will also be in writing and shall be administered by the coach.

Closure

The importance of adherence to all regulations in this handbook should be apparent. A firm and fair policy of enforcement is necessary to prevent a travesty from being made of the regulations. The community, school administrators, coaching staff, and athletic director feel strongly that high standards of conduct and citizenship are essential in maintaining a solid program of athletics. We intend to preserve rules that reasonably pertain to the health and safety of the individual and the orderly conduct of sports. We do not wish to establish arbitrary personal preferences to ensure absolute uniformity. The welfare of the student is our major consideration. Hopefully, their welfare transcends any other consideration.

If an athlete fails to comply with these standards, it will be interpreted by the Athletic Department as an indication that the athlete does not have sufficient desire to participate in the educational-based athletic program. Therefore, the athlete will be denied the privilege of participating until they can prove this desire. The precise period of suspension will depend upon the violation(s) and the attitude of the athlete. Generally, a minimum of one week will be necessary to prove the desire to participate and to comply with all standards, which have been established for the benefit of the athlete and the team. Repeated or flagrant violations may result in total suspension from the athletic program. The coach may immediately suspend a player for 24 hours and at the end of that time suspend them for an additional period not to exceed one week (7 days). Any suspension period of more than one week shall be determined by a consensus of the athlete’s coach or coaches, and the administration.
