Role Summary:
The tax reporting team is responsible for analysing, assuring, and explaining bp’s externally reported tax numbers, providing expert tax accounting advice and support across the global tax team. This role offers an opportunity to liaise with multiple stakeholders across the company, helping to assure the numbers we prepare and shape the story they are telling at the highest levels of the organisation.
The Vice President, Tax Reporting is accountable for providing leadership, governance and assurance over bp’s externally reported tax numbers and for the integrity of tax inputs into internal forecasts, including the effective tax rate (ETR) and cash tax.
The role leads a specialist tax reporting team and works closely with senior partners across Finance, the wider Tax function, and the business to ensure that tax outcomes are accurately reflected, well‑understood and aligned with applicable accounting standards and bp policies.
As a member of the Tax Leadership Team, the VP, Tax Reporting plays a key role in shaping the strategic direction, operating model and priorities of the bp Tax function, contributing to continuous improvement, capability building and value protection across the Group.
Key Accountabilities:
Tax reporting and assurance
- Provide leadership and oversight of the preparation, consolidation and assurance of bp’s externally reported tax numbers, including income tax charge, ETR and cash tax disclosures.
- Ensure tax balances, provisions and disclosures are robust, transparent and aligned with IFRS, bp policy and governance requirements.
- Act as a key point of engagement with Group Reporting, Investor Relations and senior Finance leadership on significant tax accounting matters and judgements.
- Own relationships with internal and external auditors on tax reporting matters, addressing complex issues and ensuring timely resolution.
Forecasting and planning
- Oversee tax inputs into internal forecasting processes, including quarterly outlooks, long‑term plans and scenario analysis for ETR and cash taxes.
- Provide insight and challenge to ensure tax assumptions reflect business activity, tax law developments and strategic decisions.
- Ensure consistency and alignment between external reporting and internal projections.
Leadership and team management
- Lead, develop and inspire a high‑performing global tax reporting team, setting clear expectations and fostering a strong culture of accountability and technical excellence.
- Build capability within the team to respond to increasing complexity, evolving standards and partner demands.
- Promote effective collaboration with other parts of the tax function, finance enablers and business teams.
- Provide leadership input on significant transactions, business changes and pivotal initiatives from a tax reporting and disclosure perspective.
- Support continuous improvement in controls, processes and systems underpinning tax reporting and forecasting.
- Be an active member of the Tax Leadership Team, contributing to the development of bp’s tax strategy, priorities and operating model.
The role holder will help to drive modernization across tax processes through innovative approaches to standard processes, leveraging technology and digital solutions to drive improved insights, cost efficiencies and to deliver value. As a Senior Level Leader within bp, the role holder will also be expected to inspire and empower others to achieve organisational aims whilst creating a culture in line with Who We Are, fostering a culture of accountability and inspiring trust. The role holder will be expected to build strong relationships, understand the needs and goals of the team, and drive a culture of continuous improvement in service of bp’s strategic direction.
Essential Experience and Qualifications:
- Deep practical expertise in IFRS income tax accounting, including group tax consolidation, significant judgement areas, tax disclosures and audit scrutiny.
- Leadership of specialist technical teams, including setting direction, managing performance, building capability and succession, and role‑modelling a strong control approach.
- Extensive experience working across Finance, including close collaboration with Group Reporting, Planning, Treasury and Investor Relations functions.
- Track record of senior partner engagement, including interaction with external auditors and internal governance forums on complex and sensitive tax matters.
- Sound understanding of tax risk, internal controls and governance, with experience identifying, managing and remediating control gaps within financial reporting processes.
- Ability to operate effectively at executive level, influencing outcomes, exercising judgement under pressure and balancing technical rigour with commercial pragmatism.
- Experience contributing to or shaping functional strategy and operating model decisions within a global tax or finance environment.
- Fluency in business English.
- Degree qualified or equivalent experience/education.
- Professional tax or accounting qualification (e.g. CTA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent).
Desirable criteria
- Exposure to tax implications of major transactions, restructurings or critical initiatives, including input into investment decisions from a tax reporting perspective.
- Familiarity with long‑term planning and scenario modelling for ETR and cash tax in volatile or uncertain business environments.
- Experience driving improvement in execution or transformation within tax reporting, forecasting or controls frameworks.
- Strong understanding of the interface between tax reporting and broader financial metrics.
- Ability to communicate complex tax concepts clearly and confidently to non‑tax audiences, including senior leaders.
