Job Description
Office: Finance
Accountable to: Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Employment Type: Permanent
Based: Midrand
Salary: Market related
Working arrangement: Hybrid, with 3 days per week in our Midrand office and 2 days remote.
Overview
The Finance & Management Accountant is responsible for establishing, strengthening and operating Boxfusion's internal finance function, covering management accounting, financial operations and controls, budgeting, project profitability, supplier and payment management, reporting and commercial support. The role also manages the relationship with our external accounting provider while progressively bringing appropriate activities in-house.
Reporting directly to the COO, you will design and implement the internal finance operating model, deliver trusted and timely management reporting, make project profitability visible, and give the COO commercially useful financial insight rather than only historical reporting.
Key responsibilities
Finance Function Build-out
- Assess the current external finance arrangement, identify gaps and risks, and design the internal finance operating model, policies and SOPs
- Present the Finance department build-out plan to the COO for review and approval before implementation
- Act as the internal owner of the relationship with the external accounting provider, reviewing, challenging and progressively taking ownership of appropriate activities
- Establish and maintain financial controls, including delegation of authority, approval limits, segregation of duties, and purchase-to-pay and payment controls
Management Accounting & Reporting
- Prepare monthly management accounts and dashboards covering revenue, margin, cash flow, debtors and creditors, budget performance and project profitability
- Coordinate the annual budgeting process and produce monthly budget-vs-actual reporting with variance analysis
- Coordinate a disciplined month-end and year-end close, including reconciliations and support for year-end financial statements
- Provide commercial business-partnering support to the COO, including business cases, pricing and costing analysis, forecasting and scenario modelling
Project Profitability
- Establish project-level financial tracking, covering budget vs. actual, margin and profitability, across the software and delivery business
- Work with Project Managers on variances and flag at-risk projects early
Financial Operations
- Own accounts payable, including purchase orders, invoice review, supplier payments and reconciliations, and process payment-related requests received from the Receptionist / Office Coordinator
- Own accounts receivable, billing accuracy and debtor management, protecting revenue and reducing Days Sales Outstanding
- Own spend governance for ride-hailing (Uber/Bolt) services, following up on flagged transactions and making spend-control decisions
- Manage banking, payment batches, bank reconciliations and short- and medium-term cash-flow forecasting
Statutory Compliance & Governance
- Coordinate South African statutory and tax compliance (SARS, VAT, PAYE and CIPC) with the external tax practitioner and accounting officer
- Supply BBBEE financial evidence (spend, procurement and skills-development spend) to the Operations Manager
- Apply approved AI-assisted tools to strengthen reporting, reconciliation and forecasting productivity, while maintaining data governance and confidentiality
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements
- BCom in Accounting, Financial Management, Management Accounting or a related field
- 3–5 years' relevant finance experience spanning both transactional finance and management accounting
- Demonstrated experience preparing management accounts, budgets and financial reports
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable and bank reconciliations
- Strong Excel / Google Sheets capability and experience with an accounting / ERP system
- Sound understanding of South African tax, VAT and statutory finance requirements
- Ability to build finance processes and controls from the ground up, not only process existing ones
