Job Description
Summary: Zoox is transforming mobility with fully autonomous, electric vehicles designed for a driverless future. They are seeking a UI/UX Design Intern to reimagine the user experience of their internal platform, focusing on design problems from research to shipped UI.
Responsibilities:
- Audit the existing internal platform and identify friction points, inconsistencies, and opportunities for measurable improvement
- Design clean, modern, minimalistic interfaces that prioritize clarity, hierarchy, and speed of use
- Systematize. Build and contribute to a reusable component library and design system to ensure consistency across the platform
- Partner with engineering, product, and end-users to validate ideas through interviews, usability tests, and rapid iteration
- Translate complex internal workflows into simple, intuitive UI patterns that follow industry best practices
- Define and track UX metrics (task completion time, error rate, satisfaction) to demonstrate the impact of your work
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Design, HCI, Computer Science, or a related field — or a self-taught designer with a strong portfolio
- Good academic standing
- Able to commit to a 12-week internship during the following summer 2026 cohort: June 15th - September 4th
- Ability to relocate to the Bay Area, CA for the duration of the internship
- A portfolio that demonstrates a clear point of view: modern, minimalistic, and grounded in usability principles
- Fluency in Figma; comfort building components, variants, and auto-layout systems
- Solid understanding of UI fundamentals: typography, spacing, color theory, contrast, accessibility (WCAG basics), and responsive design
- Familiarity with design systems (Material, Apple HIG, Polaris, or similar) and when to follow versus deviate from them
- Strong communication skills — able to explain design decisions with reasoning, not just aesthetics
- Self-directed and outcome-oriented. You can scope your own work in a 12-week window and ship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience designing for B2B, enterprise, or internal tooling
- Working knowledge of HTML/CSS or front-end frameworks (React, Tailwind) — enough to prototype or pair with engineers
- Exposure to motion design, micro-interactions, or design tokens
Required Skills: Figma, UI fundamentals, Typography, Spacing, Color theory, Accessibility (WCAG basics), Responsive design, Design systems, HTML, CSS, React, Tailwind, Motion design, Micro-interactions, Design tokens, Outcome orientation
