Job Description
Summary: Zoox is developing the first ground-up, fully autonomous vehicle fleet and the supporting ecosystem required to bring this technology to market. The System Safety Intern will support safety analysis and contribute to the safe deployment of autonomous vehicles through various engineering tasks.
Responsibilities:
- Support safety analysis of live service events or off-vehicle software components and tools
- Lead the safety and reliable progress evaluation of Zoox operations and service such as TeleOperations, remote operator support tools, and test equipment
- Perform safety and progress analysis using methods such as System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), requirements definition, and field safety investigations
- Initiate process improvements related to how we track our ability to always finish the mission and deliver a satisfied rider safely to their destination
- Evaluate the autonomous vehicle’s interfaces and its response to various faults
- Conduct various types of data analysis, review and develop requirements, and build dashboards
Required Qualifications:
- Currently working towards a B.S., M.S., Ph.D., or advanced degree in a relevant engineering program
- Must be returning to school to continue your education upon completing this internship
- Good academic standing
- Able to commit to a 12-week internship beginning in May or June of 2026
- At least one previous industry internship, co-op, or project completed in a relevant area
- Ability to relocate to the Bay Area, California for the duration of the internship
- Interns at Zoox may not use any proprietary information they are working on as part of their thesis, any published work with their university, or to be distributed to anyone outside of Zoox
- Solid understanding of statistical tools, such as importance sampling and Bayesian models
- Experience or familiarity with analysis of large datasets
- Strong knowledge of vehicle dynamics, control theory, mechanical and electrical control systems
- Experience working with vehicle dynamics simulation tools such as Carmaker and/or Carsim
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong Familiarity with Python, Scala, and/or SQL
- Familiarity with extracting sparse signals from large datasets
- Experience working with cloud based APIs or network connectivity
- Experience working with operational safety or remote operators
