Job Description
Summary: Xcel Energy is a company focused on electric distribution projects, and they are seeking a Designer to manage and design these projects for both new and existing customers. The role involves technical drafting, project management, and customer interaction, utilizing GIS software and drafting tools to create accurate technical drawings and models.
Responsibilities:
- Design and manage electric distribution projects for new and existing customers from initiation through completion
- Create, update, and revise sketches, working drawings, and contract documents using GIS software or manual drafting methods
- Prepare 2D and 3D models to support project design and engineering needs
- Perform transformer sizing, underground cable routing, and pole placement as part of system design
- Conduct field visits to residential, commercial, and construction sites to perform assessments and gather project data
- Check project management systems regularly for new customer contacts and project updates
- Read and comprehend detailed customer requirements, data sheets, and supplier specifications
- Prepare bills of material, schedules, and supporting documentation for design drawings
- Assist engineering personnel with formal drawing transmittals and construction issue resolution
- Participate in weekly scheduling meetings and team touchpoints to coordinate project progress
- Interact directly with customers to understand project needs and communicate design solutions
- Complete assignments utilizing information provided by project engineering, architectural, or technical services staff under supervisor direction
Required Qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with customers and team members
- Solid organizational and project management abilities to handle multiple concurrent projects
- Basic electrical knowledge or background with familiarity in engineering concepts and terminology
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
- Adaptability and willingness to learn new tools, systems, and processes
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Comfort with a mix of field and office-based work, including travel to various project sites
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in electrical, utility, construction, or a related technical field is preferred but not required
- Backgrounds in fields such as construction, customer service, or other technical disciplines will be considered
- Experience with GIS platforms such as GE Smallworld or drafting tools such as AutoCAD is a plus but not required
- Familiarity with drafting techniques and engineering terminology is beneficial
