Engineering Internship (Summer 2026) at xAI in Memphis, TN

Summary: xAI is a company dedicated to creating AI systems to aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. They are seeking an Engineering Intern with a focus on Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering to support the design and optimization of advanced data center infrastructure. This role provides hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with engineers on critical projects. Responsibilities: - Assist in analyzing electrical systems of high-capacity power distribution (PDUs), UPS systems, and cooling units - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate electrical plans with mechanical designs, ensuring seamless operation of AI compute hardware - Keep documentation of design processes, test results, and project updates to maintain clear communication with the engineering team - Design, build and program system automation that has a tangible impact on xAI's continued success - Collaborate across teams (Engineering, Operations, etc.) to complete their Intern Project while gaining exposure to multiple parts of the business - Work on a wide-variety of I&C related tasks, from hands-on wiring instruments in the field to programming the Ignition Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system - Assist in analyzing and designing structural systems for data center facilities, including foundations, steel/concrete framing, and floor loading for heavy equipment - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate structural designs with mechanical, electrical, and site civil elements, enabling seamless support of high-density AI hardware - Maintain thorough documentation of design calculations, analysis results, modeling efforts, and project updates to support clear communication with the engineering team Required Qualifications: - Current enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field - Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit) and basic engineering analysis tools - Understanding of datacenter electrical systems such as transformers, switchgear, generators, UPS systems - Strong problem-solving skills and eagerness to learn in a high-impact, technical environment - Ability to work collaboratively in a team and communicate ideas clearly - Passion for xAI's mission to advance human scientific discovery through AI - Ability to lift and move equipment up to 25 pounds during testing or installation tasks - Comfort working in a data center environment, including occasional exposure to noise and temperature variations - Able to work full time, onsite for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning in May or June 2026 - Able to provide own transportation for positions in Memphis, TN and Southaven, MS Preferred Qualifications: - Prior experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems, SQL Databases, Python, or HTML is a plus Required Skills: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering Important Skills: CAD software, Electrical systems knowledge, Programmable Logic Controllers, SCADA Systems Nice-to-Have Skills: Passion for AI Internship Start Date: Start in 2026 Summer
