The internship role involves supporting software engineering projects that enhance the performance and scalability of grid simulation platforms, requiring collaboration with experienced engineers to optimize system efficiency.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze the runtime and computational performance of core grid analysis features, such as power flow, feeder screening, and contingency analysis
- Identify performance bottlenecks related to algorithms, parallel computation, or cloud service interactions
- Implement targeted performance improvements and benchmark results before and after changes
- Prototype and evaluate AI/ML-assisted approaches to reduce the combinatorial complexity of large-scale contingency analysis
- Produce clear, data-driven performance reports that document findings, tradeoffs, and outcomes
- Contribute clean, well-documented prototype code that can inform future production implementations
- Collaborate cross-functionally with software engineering and AI teams to assess scalability and feasibility
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
- A strong foundation in software engineering fundamentals
- Experience with algorithmic analysis, debugging, and performance measurement
- Programming experience in Python or a similar language used in data-intensive systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
- Curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to experiment, iterate, and learn
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest or experience in performance engineering, such as runtime analysis, parallel computation, or latency optimization
- Familiarity with cloud-based systems (GCP preferred)
- Exposure to AI or machine learning concepts through coursework or academic projects
- Experience working on systems that handle large datasets or complex simulations
- Interest in infrastructure, systems, or sustainability-focused technology
Required Skills: Algorithmic analysis, Performance measurement, Python programming
Important Skills: Cloud-based systems, AI/ML concepts
Nice-to-Have Skills: Debugging, Curiosity, Persistence, Communication skills
