Summary: WSP USA is a leading engineering and professional services firm seeking a Vertical Transportation Engineer to join their team in New York City. This role involves providing technical assistance for the design, development, and inspection of Vertical Transportation Systems across various projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction
- Apply high-level vertical transportation engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various building and infrastructure project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation
- Perform professional vertical transportation engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, usage, and VTS to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits
- Develop construction and installation plans, specifications, and cost estimates; preparing construction safety and phasing plans, and updating infrastructure layout plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients
- Involved from project inception to completion in the management of vertical transportation design and construction of building and infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, new builds, operating specifications, building materials, phasing, and construction safety plans
- Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of VTS, implementing future-ready solutions with vertical transportation engineering design standards
- Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues relating to VTS and specifications
- Coordinate, review and approve installation design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations
- Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross-sections, technical drawings, spreadsheets, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address engineering, design, and/or construction issues or opportunities
- Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level risk installation, equipment operations, and/or mitigation activities
- Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and building and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects
- Remain current in latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, with a focus on VTS
- 1-3 years of relevant post-education experience, including prior experience in vertical transportation design and engineering
- Proficient in mechanical and vertical transportation engineering principles, practices, design/build processes, and their application to project work-related issues
- Extensive familiarity with building and infrastructure planning, vertical transportation design, and construction management—including rehabilitation projects and new VTS designs
- Well-versed in relevant mechanical and vertical transportation laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements specific to VTS
- Strong analytical mindset with sound judgment in evaluating vertical transportation scenarios and making informed decisions
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to both engineering and non-engineering audiences regarding VTS
- Demonstrated self-leadership with meticulous attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic VT engineering environment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team, to meet vertical transportation project objectives
- Basic proficiency in technical writing, office automation, engineering software, technology, mathematical principles, predictive modeling, spreadsheets, and VT-specific tools
- Experience with vertical transportation and discipline-specific design software (such as AutoCAD, Elevate, Revit) relevant to elevator and escalator design and analysis
- Proven track record of maintaining workplace safety and compliance with WSP's health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies as they relate to VT work environments
- Willingness to travel occasionally, as required by vertical transportation project needs
