Job Description
Summary: Wayne County Michigan is seeking a GIS Student Intern 2 to support storm water infrastructure operations. The role involves conducting field inspections, collecting geospatial data, and working closely with storm water structure cleaning crews to ensure accurate tracking and long-term asset management.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct field inspections alongside storm water cleaning crews
- Collect and log geospatial data using mobile GIS applications (e.g., Field Maps)
- Capture before-and-after photos of storm water structures
- Record structure attributes including:
- Location and type
- Lid dimensions (length/width)
- Pipe depth, count, and direction
- Structural condition and damage observations
- Measure invert elevations using basic surveying tools
- Monitor cleaning progress and ensure accurate, real-time data entry
- Submit daily reports including:
- Number of structures cleaned
- Linear footage of pipes cleaned
- Vac-truck usage metrics (fills/empties)
- Communicate updates via text, email, and reporting systems
- Maintain consistent presence on-site during operations
- Assist in identifying maintenance or repair needs
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent research and problem-solving skills
- Basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data collection methods
- Familiarity with mobile GPS systems and spatial data entry
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint)
- Ability to analyze, document, and report field data accurately
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in dynamic environments
- Understanding of basic surveying concepts and measurement techniques
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university
- Valid driver's license required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preferred fields of study: GIS / Geomatics, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science or related field
- Familiarity with ArcGIS or similar GIS platforms preferred
- Basic experience with data collection or fieldwork is a plus
