Job Description Summary
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help design, build, and evolve Walmart’s next-generation International Pricing platforms.
The International Pricing team enables Walmart’s mission of Every Day Low Price (EDLP). At its core, the team is responsible for the systems that help set, manage, approve, and execute prices for first-party items across Walmart’s international markets.
The platforms you build will support multiple countries, each representing a multi-billion-dollar business. You will solve complex engineering and business problems involving large-scale data processing, pricing recommendations, rules and workflows, downstream price execution, resiliency, auditability, and market-specific requirements.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will be expected to write production-quality code, lead architecture and design, review critical technical decisions, and mentor engineers across the team.
About the Team
Walmart International Technology enables our stores, eCommerce operations, associates, and customers across markets outside the United States.
The International Pricing Engineering team builds and operates platforms that support the end-to-end price-setting lifecycle for first-party merchandise. These capabilities include pricing strategy and recommendations, business-rule evaluation, simulations, approval workflows, manual and automated price setting, markdown optimization, competitive pricing intelligence, and price execution through downstream systems.
Our goal is to build a scalable, resilient, multi-market pricing platform that supports common global capabilities while accommodating the regulatory, operational, currency, hierarchy, and business-process requirements of individual markets.
What You’ll Do
- Remain hands-on and contribute production-quality code for critical platform capabilities, complex integrations, and technically challenging initiatives.
- Define and own the end-to-end technical architecture for International Pricing platforms.
- Write high-quality design documents, including HLDs, LLDs, Architecture Decision Records, API contracts, data models, sequence diagrams, and operational readiness plans.
- Review architecture and technical designs produced by engineering teams and ensure alignment with platform standards, scalability, reliability, security, and long-term maintainability.
- Design and build scalable, high-throughput, and low-latency Java- or Kotlin-based microservices deployed on cloud infrastructure.
- Build extensible pricing capabilities using domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, Kafka, API-first principles, and well-defined service boundaries.
- Design solutions for pricing recommendations, rule evaluation, approvals, simulations, publishing, execution, auditability, and downstream-system integration.
- Own data-modelling and persistence strategies across relational, NoSQL, and analytical data stores, with a strong focus on data accuracy, lineage, consistency, and traceability.
- Design resilient distributed workflows using appropriate patterns such as orchestration, outbox, retries, circuit breaking, idempotency, and dead-letter processing.
- Define REST and gRPC APIs with clear contracts, backward-compatibility guarantees, versioning strategies, and consumer-driven contract testing.
- Design for multi-market and multi-tenant use cases while balancing global platform consistency with market-specific business requirements.
- Identify and proactively address systemic risks, including scaling bottlenecks, single points of failure, data-integrity gaps, operational dependencies, and technical-debt accumulation.
- Drive architecture and integration alignment with shared platforms and downstream systems responsible for price calculation, price publishing, execution, catalogue, analytics, and store operations.
- Represent International Pricing in cross-organizational architecture and engineering forums.
- Build and improve CI/CD pipelines for automated build, testing, security validation, canary deployment, rollback, and production verification.
- Drive observability-first engineering through structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, dashboards, actionable alerts, and business-flow monitoring.
- Ensure that services comply with enterprise security, privacy, infrastructure, and software-development standards.
- Lead production-readiness reviews, incident investigations, root-cause analyses, and reliability-improvement initiatives.
- Mentor junior, mid-level, and senior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, technical discussions, pairing, and structured feedback.
- Establish engineering standards for design quality, code quality, automated testing, performance, security, release readiness, and operational excellence.
- Partner closely with Product, Data Science, Business, Program, Quality Engineering, and other platform teams to translate complex pricing requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Promote a platform-first mindset by creating reusable and configurable capabilities that enable multiple markets and engineering teams without duplicating solutions.
- Identify opportunities to simplify architecture, automate manual processes, improve developer productivity, and deliver measurable business value.
- Make sound technical decisions and solve complex problems efficiently in a high-impact, fast-moving environment.
What You’ll Bring
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 12+ years of relevant software-engineering experience, including experience building highly available, resilient, and scalable distributed systems.
- Strong hands-on programming experience with Java 17/21, Spring Boot or comparable frameworks, microservices, REST APIs, and event-driven systems.
- Expert-level understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, distributed-system fundamentals, design patterns, and software-engineering principles.
- Strong experience with Kafka or similar messaging platforms and asynchronous processing patterns.
- Experience designing and operating systems using relational and NoSQL databases.
- Advanced experience with cloud infrastructure such as Azure, GCP, or AWS.
- Strong understanding of Docker, Kubernetes, service-to-service communication, autoscaling, resource management, and cloud-native deployment patterns.
- Experience designing systems that process large data volumes while maintaining strong consistency, traceability, performance, and availability.
- Demonstrated ability to author clear technical designs and influence architecture across multiple teams.
- Strong troubleshooting skills, including the ability to diagnose complex production issues across applications, infrastructure, messaging, and data layers.
- Experience driving engineering excellence through automated testing, performance optimization, reliability improvements, operational readiness, and incident prevention.
- Experience integrating machine-learning inference APIs or model endpoints into production services.
- Familiarity with GenAI-assisted engineering tools and their responsible use across software-development workflows.
- Strong communication, facilitation, negotiation, and consensus-building skills.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and raise the technical capabilities of the broader team.
- Ability to balance immediate delivery needs with long-term platform architecture and sustainability.
- Experience building or operating large-scale retail, eCommerce, pricing, promotion, markdown, or revenue-management platforms.
- Understanding of retail pricing concepts such as EDLP, competitive pricing, price rules, simulations, approvals, price execution, regional pricing, and markdown optimization.
- Experience building multi-tenant or multi-market platforms with shared global capabilities and configurable market-specific behaviour.
- Experience integrating with complex upstream and downstream enterprise systems.
- A continuous drive to simplify, automate, improve, and optimize platforms, tools, development workflows, and operational processes.
