Accounting Director at Wagmo in New York City
Job Description
Accounting Director
Location: New York City
What We Do
Wagmo is a modern pet healthcare company built around how pet parents actually care for their pets. We partner with employers to provide a complete approach to pet and pet-parent wellbeing, from preventive wellness plans and emergency coverage to 24/7 pet telehealth guidance. Our purpose is to unlock every pet parent's potential to provide extraordinary care, and we do it by bringing the same intentionality to pet benefits that the best employers bring to human healthcare. Founded in 2017 and female-founded, Wagmo is headquartered in New York City and trusted by leading employers nationwide.
What's Important to Us
Our mission shapes everything we build and how we work together. We take fearless ownership of outcomes, collaborate with radical candor, and are always driven by the customers and pet parents who trust us. We think critically, follow through relentlessly, and find the extra 10% that turns good work into exceptional work. We keep it weird because the obvious answer is rarely the most interesting one. Our values aren't aspirational. We interview for them and hold each other accountable to them. If what you've read so far resonates with you and you want to be part of a team where every person makes the company meaningfully better, we'd love to hear from you.
About The Role
We are hiring an Accounting Director to own our financial reporting and lead an accounting function that is fast, accurate, and audit-ready. You will run the monthly financial close, own the annual audit, and build the controls that let us scale effectively. This role also optimizes our general ledger and brings AI proactively into how accounting gets done. It offers the opportunity to partner with key business owners across Sales, Marketing, Product, Engineering, Operations, and Customer Success. This role will report to our VP Finance. Our clients, investors, and auditors rely on our numbers. You will make sure they can trust them.
Location: This is a hybrid role based in NYC; candidates must be willing and able to work in-office three days per week.
Core Responsibilities
Own the financial close and consolidated reporting: Run the monthly, quarterly, and annual close. Make it faster and cleaner each quarter, with few post-close adjustments.
Make accounting AI-first: Build and run a roadmap for using AI and automation in reconciliations, anomaly detection, and control testing. Your goal is to have AI in at least half of our accounting processes by the end of your first year.
Strengthen our general ledger: Clean up and optimize our books in QuickBooks, then run the selection of the ERP that will carry us through our next stage of growth.
Build the team and controls behind our books: Manage our accounting team with clear service levels and documented processes, and decide what we should bring in-house as we grow. Work with our Finance Manager to improve cash reporting and tighten cash controls and processes.
Scale billing: Work with Engineering, Product, Client Success, and Sales so billing and revenue data flow cleanly across our enterprise clients and broker partners. Fewer errors and disputes, and less manual rework.
Lead the annual audit: Manage the audit from start to finish and own the auditor relationship. Build a control framework that fits a growing private company: key controls, reconciliations, and segregation of duties.
Deliver investor, tax, and external reporting: Make sure reporting is accurate, on time, and ties to the books. Oversee federal and state tax reporting requirements with the support of our external tax advisors.
What You'll Need To Be Successful
8+ years in accounting roles with increasing responsibility, including experience leading people. CPA required.
Deep US GAAP expertise. You know revenue recognition, consolidations, and accruals well. Experience in insurance, insurance-adjacent, or subscription and benefits businesses is a plus. You can take a position and defend it to auditors.
Hands-on curiosity about AI. You have picked tools, chosen use cases, measured the payoff, and managed risks like data privacy and accuracy.
Experience building controls and leading audits. You have built documentation and controls that scale, and you balance rigor with speed.
Strong cross-functional partnership. You can explain accounting needs to Engineering and Product in their terms, and you earn trust with Sales and Client Success.
A builder’s mindset. You have led an external team, and you have led people through big changes like a new system or process.
Experience with QuickBooks is preferred.
Why Consider This Role?
Pet spending in the U.S. has reached $200 billion and the category is still early in its lifecycle. Wagmo is building the platform to lead it. This is a rare chance to join at a moment when the work you do today shapes what the industry looks like tomorrow.
Wagmo is a female-founded, Inc. 5000 recognized company where performance matters more than pedigree. We are growing fast, building something that matters, and there is real ownership equity in that journey.
The team is exceptionally smart, curious, and kind, led by transparent and low-ego leadership. We take the work seriously and never take ourselves too seriously. This is not a traditional 9-to-5 job. It asks for real dedication and impact, and gives you genuine flexibility and autonomy in return.
