Position Summary
The Assistant Deli Manager supports the Deli Manager in overseeing daily deli department operations, ensuring exceptional customer service, food quality, food safety compliance, and department profitability. This position assists with associate supervision, inventory management, merchandising execution, production planning, and shrink control while helping maintain a clean, organized, and customer-focused deli department. Key Responsibilities Department Operations
- Assist in managing the daily operations of the deli department.
- Support food production planning to ensure adequate product availability and freshness.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering, receiving, and product rotation.
- Ensure products are properly prepared, packaged, labeled, displayed, and stored according to company standards.
- Help maintain department organization, cleanliness, and operational efficiency.
- Assist with implementing company programs, department initiatives, and operational procedures.
Customer Service
- Deliver outstanding customer service and create a positive shopping experience.
- Assist customers with product selection, meal solutions, catering requests, and special orders.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Promote deli offerings through suggestive selling and product knowledge.
- Foster a culture focused on customer satisfaction and service excellence.
Merchandising & Sales
- Maintain attractive, fully stocked, and organized product displays.
- Ensure promotional displays, pricing, and signage are accurate and properly executed.
- Support seasonal, holiday, and sales-driving merchandising initiatives.
- Monitor sales trends and communicate opportunities to improve department performance.
- Maintain product quality, freshness, and presentation standards.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and company regulations.
- Monitor food preparation, storage, temperature controls, and handling procedures.
- Ensure proper cleaning and sanitation of equipment, work areas, and display cases.
- Verify product quality, freshness, and code dating standards are maintained.
- Promote safe work practices and maintain a safe environment for associates and customers.
Leadership & Team Development
- Assist with training, coaching, and developing deli associates.
- Provide daily leadership, direction, and support to department team members.
- Foster teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment.
- Assist with scheduling and labor management efforts.
- Monitor productivity and help ensure department goals are achieved.
- Serve as acting department leader in the Deli Manager's absence.
Financial Performance
- Assist in controlling department expenses, inventory levels, and shrink.
- Support achievement of sales, labor, and profitability goals.
- Monitor department productivity and operational effectiveness.
- Help identify opportunities to improve financial performance and customer satisfaction.
- Support initiatives designed to increase sales and operational efficiency.
Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous grocery, retail, food service, restaurant, or deli experience.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic understanding of food preparation, merchandising, and inventory management.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
- Experience in deli, prepared foods, restaurant, or grocery operations.
- Knowledge of inventory control, ordering systems, and labor management practices.
- Food safety certification or ability to obtain certification.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive motions.
- Ability to work in refrigerated environments and around hot food preparation equipment.
- Manual dexterity necessary for food preparation, slicing, packaging, and stocking activities.
