Job Description
Summary: Verkada is transforming how organizations protect their people and places with an integrated, AI-powered platform. As an Industrial Design Intern, you’ll design and develop cameras, access control systems, sensors, and other connected devices while collaborating with a diverse team of designers and hardware engineers.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the visual and physical language of our brand through the design of our hardware
- Utilize user-centric thinking and keen aesthetic sensibility to align our brand to customer needs
- Support the design team in conducting research on user needs, market trends, and competitive analysis to inform product design decisions
- Assist in the development and refinement of product prototypes, participating in user testing and feedback sessions to iteratively improve designs
- Collaborate with our hardware engineering team to explore, prototype & test new product concepts to finalize form, CMF & UX
- Work closely with design, engineering, product management, and operations on complex technical programs in a fast-paced environment
- Stay current with the latest design trends, materials, manufacturing processes, and industry developments to bring the team fresh and innovative ideas
- Contribute concepts and problem-solving across multiple projects
Required Qualifications:
- A website or digital portfolio is required for consideration
- Senior-level industrial design students pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree, as well as recent ID graduates
- A positive attitude and proactive mentality to take initiative on design explorations and actively support team goals
- A high level of sensitivity to form and function, attention to detail, and conceptual clarity
- A generalist approach to technical skills: design strategy, customer insights, form development, sketching, physical prototyping at various levels of fidelity, package design, 3D modeling, and CMF exploration and selection
- Strong physical prototyping skills, particularly in 3d printing and working with wood and foam
- Proficient in 2D & 3D digital tools like Solidworks, Rhino, Fusion360, Keyshot, Adobe Suite, etc
- Experience working directly with mechanical and electrical engineers to solve problems in a collaborative team environment
- A strong understanding of material properties, manufacturing processes, and production timelines
- Ability to generate and communicate design vision, or embrace and extend existing solutions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with cameras, environmental sensors, control systems, sensor sub-assemblies, or connected devices
- Experience designing products for harsh environments
