Staff Electrical Engineer at Ventaris Surgical in San Carlos, CA

About Ventaris Surgical

Ventaris Surgical is a venture-backed medical device company founded in 2024 and headquartered in San Carlos, California. Backed by leading MedTech investors following a $30 million Series A financing, we are developing a next-generation ureteroscopic system designed to help surgeons achieve more complete kidney stone clearance in a single procedure while reducing the physical and cognitive burden of treatment.

Kidney stone disease is one of the world's most common urologic conditions. Nearly 1 in 10 people will experience a kidney stone in their lifetime, and more than 500,000 people undergo kidney stone surgery in the U.S. each year. Yet today's tools make it difficult for surgeons to consistently achieve complete stone clearance. Our vision is simple: every patient stone-free through a single procedure.

About the Role

We are seeking a hands on Staff Electrical Engineer to own the electrical and firmware development, testing, and regulatory compliance of our cutting edge medical devices. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who designs, builds, and debugs at the bench while also managing the test houses, contract manufacturers, suppliers, and consulting resources as needed that bring the product to market. You will drive seamless integration between hardware and firmware and lead product testing for regulatory clearance (e.g., FDA, IEC 60601, ISO 13485).

The ideal candidate is a technical expert in medical device development, embedded systems, and regulatory testing who enjoys rolling up their sleeves and takes full ownership of outcomes. Must be able to operate effectively with cross-functional teams while owning electrical engineering deliverables.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Product Development

• Own the hands on design, development, and integration of embedded systems for medical devices, ensuring compliance with FDA and international standards.

• Design, review, and approve electrical schematics, PCB layouts, and firmware architectures to ensure reliability and manufacturability.

• Guide contract engineers and internal teams on safety-critical design considerations, including risk management and failure mode analysis.

• Implement best practices for medical-grade embedded software (IEC 62304) and hardware safety requirements (IEC 60601).

Vendor & Contract Manufacturer Management

• Manage external contract manufacturers (CMs), software developers, and hardware suppliers, ensuring quality and timeline adherence.

• Oversee the selection, negotiation, and performance of vendors to optimize design transfer and production scalability.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (RA/QA, clinical, operations) to ensure smooth device development and manufacturing.

Regulatory & Compliance Testing

• Lead hardware/firmware verification & validation (V&V) activities, including test plan development, execution, and reporting for regulatory submission.

• Coordinate with third-party test labs for EMC, electrical safety, biocompatibility, and cybersecurity testing.

• Ensure compliance with FDA, IEC 60601, IEC 62304, and HIPAA for medical software and hardware.

Process Optimization & Risk Management

• Establish test automation and validation frameworks to improve efficiency in compliance testing.

• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance device reliability, cybersecurity, and manufacturability.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

• 8+ years of hands on experience in medical device development, embedded systems, or related fields.

• Proven experience managing contract developers, manufacturers, and external testing labs.

• Expertise in embedded software development (C/C++, RTOS, microcontrollers) and medical hardware design.

• Experience with cybersecurity best practices.

• Strong project management, communication, and problem solving skills, paired with a bias toward hands on execution.

Why join Ventaris Surgical?

• High impact from day one — we're a small team, and every role is mission-critical.

• A clear, compelling mission: every patient stone-free in one complete treatment.

• A rare moment to help define a new standard of care, at a point when the field is still shifting away from incremental improvements.

• Strong $30M Series A funding from leading MedTech investors.

• A culture built on collaboration, candor, and conviction — no politics, no bureaucracy.

What we are looking for

We are a value based company and look for folks who:

• Collaboration: Time and attention are finite. Meetings are purposeful. Own your work. Be accountable. Drive to closure. Asking for help is strength, not weakness.

• Candor: Speak up early, directly, respectfully. Debate ideas, not people. Raise concerns when small. No politics, passivity, or condescension.

• Conviction: Mission guides every decision. Hard tradeoffs in the collective good. Getting it right > being right. Challenge each other, then commit fully.
