Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Medical or Specialty Director, the Nurse Practitioner – DOC is responsible for providing culturally competent, high-quality healthcare services to patients within the correctional healthcare setting. The Nurse Practitioner evaluates, diagnoses, and treats physical and behavioral health conditions while providing counseling, education, preventive care, and ongoing comprehensive healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered care in a correctional healthcare setting.
- Conduct patient assessments, physical examinations, diagnoses, and treatment planning.
- Order and interpret diagnostic and screening tests.
- Prescribe medications and treatments within scope of practice.
- Provide preventive care, patient education, and chronic disease management.
- Refer patients to specialists and other healthcare services as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, behavioral health staff, and other care team members.
- Participate in quality improvement, population health, and patient safety initiatives.
- Maintain required licenses, certifications, clinical privileges, and professional standards.
- Participate in on-call, evening, or weekend coverage as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Current Nurse Practitioner license to practice in Washington, DC.
- Current DC Controlled Substance Registration (CDS).
- Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration in Washington, DC.
- Board certified or board eligible as a Nurse Practitioner in the applicable specialty.
- Must obtain required board certification within one year of hire, if applicable.
- Ability and willingness to participate in regularly scheduled on-call rotations.
- Ability and willingness to work evening and weekend sessions as needed to ensure appropriate patient coverage.
- Ability to provide care consistent with professional licensing requirements, regulatory standards, and Unity Health Care policies and procedures.
- Commitment to providing culturally competent, patient-centered care to diverse and underserved populations.
- Correctional healthcare experience preferred but not required.
