Job Description
Summary: Union Tank Car Company - UTLX is part of the global industrial organization Marmon Holdings, committed to making a positive impact on the world. The Project Engineer (Research & Development) will be responsible for researching and improving practices related to the design and manufacturing of tank cars and hopper cars, ensuring compliance with regulatory demands and providing technical expertise.
Responsibilities:
- Ensures that existing manufacturing and repair methods, standards, and procedures are constantly reviewed, improved and new or improved processes installed to reduce costs, improve quality and provide superior efficiency
- Ensures that complete and useful R&D engineering information is disseminated in a timely fashion to all internal customers with respect to new applications
- Ensures that the company and the R&D Department are adequately represented in all industry, trade and regulatory organizations which concern project engineering standards
- Provides engineering services to all repair shops, providing state-of-the-art equipment and continuous evaluation of production and repair processes and capabilities to ensure efficient operations
- Identifies designs and conducts R&D projects which enhance Procor and UTC market position, especially through improvement of existing and commercialization of new designs on tank car parts and components
- Provides R&D project engineering services to all repair shops, providing process improvements to ensure efficiency in maintaining company owned leased tank car fleet
- Participates in and actively supports Quality projects and activities and Responsible Care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical Engineering degree preferred.)
- 0-3 years of practiced and applied engineering solutions
- Rail industry experience a plus
- Ability to operate a computer and have knowledge and ability to be fluent in the use of word processing, communication, spreadsheet and database programs
- Communication skills (hearing and speech) to answer the telephone in a clear and understandable manner
- Organizational skills to instruct the assistant to establish and maintain an extensive file and library system
- Willingness and ability to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to: Safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, ear plugs and respirators
- Ability to see and hear the visual and audio safety warnings in the plants
- Willingness and ability to travel outside of the normal place of work via car, train and/or airplane
- Ability to climb to the top of and walk on tank cars without fear of heights
- Ability to bend, stretch and crawl to perform inspections in the plant
