Job Description
Summary: UCSF Health is a leading institution dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research and patient care. The Applications Programmer will apply professional programming concepts to develop software that utilizes AI in medicine, focusing on projects related to disease classification and clinical decision support.
Responsibilities:
- Implement and maintain desktop, web, and mobile applications that support and explore the usability of Shan Lab’s AI research. Write, test, and debug code following established UCSF and departmental standards
- Assist with integrating research tools, databases, and data pipelines that connect with lab-developed platforms and custom machine learning models. Ensure proper handling of sensitive medical data in compliance with HIPAA/IRB requirements
- Resolve routine programming issues, perform unit testing, and provide technical support to lab members using lab-developed software applications
- Prepare technical documentation, maintain version control, review software usability, and follow procedures for updates and bug tracking
- Work with researchers and staff to understand requirements, translate them into technical tasks, and provide basic training on developed tools
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and minimum one year of experience or equivalent experience/training
- Proficient in 1 each of database (e.g. SQL or R) and programming languages (e.g. Python, C++, JavaScript)
- Experience with deep learning models
- Knowledge relating to the design development, modification and implementation of software including object-oriented programming concepts
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
- Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with database management, query, mining and reporting software
- Proficient in statistical (e.g., SAS or STAT) languages
- Experience contributing to scientific writing and presentations
