Summary: The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Scientist Associate to join the Applied Research Laboratories. The role involves overseeing the design development, integration, and testing of hardware and mechanical components for high frequency sonar systems. Responsibilities: - Assembly, test, production, and validation of hardware at the component and system level - Design and development of mechanical packaging for high frequency sonar applications - Development of structural mechanical components for electronics packaging - Development of transducer and sonar assembly tooling - Maintenance of design documentation, production procedures, and mechanical part and assembly drawings - Other related functions as assigned Required Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering - Demonstrated ability in mechanical engineering - Exposure to interfacing with vendors and machine shops to procure mechanical components - Exposure to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5 (either in a professional or academic setting) - Exposure to design of mechanical parts and assemblies - Demonstrated ability to work independently, maintain a professional demeanor, work as a team member with and without daily supervision, multitask in a professional or academic setting - Ability to work within an environment with rapidly changing priorities, and effectively communicate with all groups of people - Able to work under pressure and accept supervision - Regular and punctual attendance - US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position Preferred Qualifications: - Experience in mechanical design and specification of electronic printed circuit card assemblies and thermal cooling systems - Experience or willingness to learn software coding - Experience or exposure to finite element analysis (FEA) for structural analysis of mechanical components using SolidWorks Simulation or equivalent software - Experience or exposure to electronics packaging and design - Experience drafting mechanical parts and assemblies as well as cable assemblies - Experience soldering and performing manual machining or welding - Cumulative GPA of 3.0 with at least a 3.2 in relevant coursework Required Skills: Mechanical Engineering, Geometric Dimensioning, Tolerancing Important Skills: Finite Element Analysis, SolidWorks Simulation, Mechanical Design, Electronics Packaging Nice-to-Have Skills: Software Coding, Soldering, Manual Machining, Welding Benefits: Retirement Plan Eligibility: The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
