Job Description
Summary: The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution seeking a motivated Student Intern – R&D to join their JMCRS Research & Development team. This internship provides hands-on experience in a regulated research environment focused on process engineering, operational efficiency, and new product/process development.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with process mapping, SIPOC analysis, and documentation of JMCRS workflows, including activities in the R&D vivarium and other operational areas
- Collect, organize, and analyze operational data to identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for process improvement
- Support prototype testing related to automation, ergonomic solutions, or new process designs
- Document observations, results, and recommendations to contribute to feasibility assessments for new or revised processes
- Collaborate with cross-functional groups including R&D Husbandry, Operational Excellence (OpEx) Continuous Improvement, and Operations
Required Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related STEM field
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and process metrics
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and familiarity with basic data analysis tools
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest in automation, robotics, or controls engineering
- Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies
