Electrical Engineering Technician / Designer - Fire Alarm & Sprinkler Systems

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated Electrical Engineering Technician / Designer to join a growing engineering team supporting fire alarm and sprinkler system design.

This opportunity is ideal for a current student or recent graduate of an Electrical Engineering Technician - Industrial program or a similar electrical engineering technology program.

Both full-time permanent and co-op candidates will be considered. Previous experience with fire alarm or sprinkler system design is an asset but not required. The ideal candidate will have a strong electrical foundation, excellent attention to detail, and a genuine interest in developing specialized expertise in fire protection systems.

Key Responsibilities

Working closely with experienced engineers and project team members, you will receive hands-on training and gradually take on responsibilities such as:

Assisting with fire alarm system design, modifications, and documentation

Supporting sprinkler system layouts and design coordination

Preparing and updating AutoCAD drawings, floor plans, and system layouts

Reviewing architectural, electrical, mechanical, and related construction drawings

Assisting with fire alarm verification and inspection documentation

Supporting CAN/ULC-S1001 integrated systems testing

Participating in site surveys, inspections, and field investigations

Identifying and documenting fire alarm devices, sprinkler components, and related building systems

Preparing reports, deficiency lists, inspection records, and project documentation

Coordinating information between electrical, fire alarm, sprinkler, and other building systems

Developing knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, and applicable CAN/ULC standards

Supporting project managers and engineers with technical documentation and project coordination

Communicating with contractors, consultants, clients, and other project stakeholders as required

As your technical knowledge and experience develop, you will have opportunities to take on increased responsibility in system design, field inspections, project coordination, and technical documentation.

Qualifications & Skills

The ideal candidate will have:

Current enrollment in or graduation from an Electrical Engineering Technician - Industrial program or a comparable electrical engineering technology program

An interest in building a career in fire alarm, sprinkler, and fire protection system design

The ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and floor plans

Familiarity with AutoCAD, or a strong interest in developing AutoCAD skills

Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify inconsistencies in drawings and documentation

Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines

Comfort working both in an office environment and at project sites

Strong communication skills and a willingness to ask questions, learn, and accept feedback

The ability to work independently after training while contributing effectively to a collaborative team

We particularly value candidates who bring practical life or work experience, including retail, food service, customer service, or similar environments, where they have developed problem-solving skills, communication abilities, adaptability, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.

Assets - Not Required

The following experience or knowledge would be considered an asset:

AutoCAD experience

Fire alarm system design, installation, or service experience

Sprinkler or fire protection system knowledge

Familiarity with CAN/ULC-S524, S536, S537, or S1001

Construction, electrical, or skilled-trades experience

Previous engineering consulting or co-op experience

Experience conducting site inspections or field investigations
