Job Description
Summary: The State of Nebraska is seeking an Accounting and Payroll Intern for the summer of 2026 to support the DHHS Finance team. The intern will assist with payroll processing, accounting operations, and internal data organization projects, providing practical experience in public sector financial operations.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with payroll processing tasks under the guidance of payroll staff
- Support reconciliation and calculation of payroll records
- Help review timesheets and payroll documentation for accuracy
- Assist with managing payroll responsibilities for a smaller service area to gain hands-on experience
- Assist with accounts payable or accounts receivable processes
- Support financial record maintenance and reconciliation activities
- Help review financial documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with procedures
- Provide support for routine accounting tasks and financial reporting
- Assist with organizing and maintaining finance team Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Support efforts to improve internal document organization within shared drives
- Help review and categorize existing documentation to improve accessibility and efficiency
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution) OR recently graduated (within one year) from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- Interest in payroll, accounting operations, or financial management
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work with numerical data
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and stay organized in a fast-paced environment
- Self-starter who can work independently while also collaborating with a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Willingness to learn and contribute to team projects
