About the Role
The Team Manager will take responsibility for the development, performance and leadership of a subset of the Humanities and Social Science portfolios in Discover. Reporting to the Executive Publisher for the subject area, you will line-manage 3-4 Associate Editors/Associate Publishers who are each responsible for their own journals. You will be responsible for the performance and success of the portfolio of journals across your team. This includes overseeing and supporting the Associate Editors/Associate Publishers reporting to you, and ensuring the launch, content development, growth, and standards maintenance of journals in their care are meeting expectations.
You will be proactive in monitoring the content and performance of your team’s journals, and you will identify and implement changes to maximise both with the support of the Executive Publisher.
Responsibilities
Take overall responsibility for your portfolio’s content and performance from setting the strategy for growth of your team’s journals to regularly monitoring KPIs and ensuring your team are fully supported and able to fulfil their responsibilities as Associate and Senior Editors. You will also be responsible for the following:
Editorial and Publishing Performance:
Ensure every journal has a clear and actionable Journal Development Plan in place that follows the Discover overarching strategy
Monitor portfolio and journals performance to identify areas for improvement and take action as appropriate with your direct reports
Ensure that appropriate editorial standards are upheld across all of your journals, collaborating with relevant teams and stakeholders regularly
Personally handle the journal development of 1-2 early-development journals
New Launches
Agree on key subjects in scope for development with the Executive Publisher
Ensure new launch proposals and approved new journals assigned to your team are completed and launched on schedule
People management and team leadership
Line manage 3-4 Associate Editors/Associate Publishers, including recruitment where required; ensure your team are fully trained and operating to the editorial standards and thresholds required for their roles
Lead your team by example with the management of your own journals
Deputise for the Executive Publisher if the necessity arises. Contribute to the strategic direction of the Discover journals
Support Discover and FOAB wide strategic projects to enhance our journals, improve our services, and make Discover/SN a great place to work; lead on specific projects as necessary and agreed with the Executive Publisher
Community
Ensure your team build excellent communications and relationships with Editorial Board Members and authors, optimising their engagement
Ensure that all your team members and Editorial Boards are fully aware of the ethos and editorial policies of Discover, and acting by them accordingly
Periodically attend conferences to promote the journals and develop a network of contacts within relevant fields
Experience, skills and qualifications
Line management experience desirable
Experience within an STM publishing environment; fully trained in editorial decision making
Experience in working with and influencing key stakeholders, community members, and other teams in a complex, international environment
Educated to PhD level (or equivalent), in a relevant field strongly preferred
Knowledge of open access publishing
Excellent communication skills
Comfortable analysing large data sets and using insights to inform actions and decisions
Excellent time management and prioritization skills, able to balance short-term deadlines with long-term goals
Self-starter with a positive, can-do approach to collaboration and problem-solving
Strong ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
Willing to travel occasionally and represent Discover at external events
