Routesetting Apprentice

Reports To: Routesetting Manager / Apprentice Program Manager

Type of Position: Part-Time, Hourly, Staff

Job Description: Routesetting Apprentices at The Spot are responsible for learning about and helping with the creation and production of high quality commercial boulder problems and routes as well as the regular, timely completion of associated chores/maintenance tasks. The Spot’s unique flavor of Route Setting encourages a creative mindset and seeks staff who are looking to progress and continually develop their craft. Events and competitions are a large part of Spot culture, and as such, setting staff will be asked to work occasional long days, be a team player and actively participate in the Spot community.

Pay Range:

$19.29/hr - 21.50/hr

Position Responsibilities:

• Participate in setting support work: regular hold washing, as well as stripping, organization, route taping, work area setup/ breakdown, setting closet organization, t-nut repair, etc
• Under the guidance of the Regional Routesetting Managers, you will learn the basics of commercial routesetting, this includes but is not limited to:
  • How to mitigate risk to yourself, co-workers, and customers through the use of best practices and personal protective equipment
  • The Work at Height skills necessary to set routes, boulders, and perform facility maintenance.
  • How to forerun effectively
  • How to create movement with regard to athletic empathy
• Continually strive to improve personal setting skills
• Maintain the equipment and supplies for the setting department
• Attend all required training sessions and meetings as directed
• Work as part of the setting team to provide a well rounded product for customers to enjoy.
• Ability to manage your time clock appropriately

Qualifications:

• A passion for climbing and movement
• Ability to climb v4 and 5.11b/c
• Applicants must be willing and able to work occasional long days and off hours
• Ability to work a physically, mentally and emotionally demanding job
• Background check required
• Must be able to independently follow written and verbal instructions
• Must be able to cheerfully and professionally communicate with members of the public
• Must be able to attend all scheduled or assigned shifts
• Must be able to comply with all industry and facility safety standards

Reports/logs to be delivered to direct supervisor:

• Annual, supervisor, and business feedback and review

Training Program and Progress Review:

This role includes a structured training program that typically runs about 90 days from the hire date. At approximately the 90-day mark, the Apprentice Program Manager will complete a progress review and document competency assessment against the rubric below.

The 90-day timeframe is the target for training schedule not a fixed term of employment- employment remains at-will throughout, and the program may be shortened, extended, or adjusted based on business needs.

A score of 75% or higher indicates a readiness to be considered for a Routesetter position. Meeting this standard makes an apprentice eligible for consideration - it does not guarantee promotion, placement or continuated employment. Any placement into a Routesetter role is made at the discretion of the company based on demonstrated competency, available openings, and business needs. Where the standard is not met, the apprentice may continue training, or focus on a defined area.
