Job Description
Summary: Salt Lake City School District, through Rose Park Elementary School, supports the educational mission of its schools and departments. The Student Support Assistant supervises students during non-academic activities, promotes a safe and positive learning environment, assists with teaching materials and clerical tasks, communicates with staff and stakeholders, and responds to safety concerns.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise students during non-academic activities to ensure students are behaving appropriately and are safe
- Promote a positive environment to prepare students for learning
- Playground supervision outdoors and indoors (in case of rain or snow), walk around perimeter, respond quickly to break-up scuffles, etc
- Be proactive in identifying, addressing, and bringing to the attention of the administrator any potential safety concerns. Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students and adhere to district policies, procedures, and state law
- Prepare teaching materials as needed, perform record-keeping and clerical functions, and organize related reports (e.g., worksheets, booklets, scheduling, copying, data recording, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) to support teachers and administrators
- Participate in various meetings as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions, attend additional training opportunities as deemed necessary, present information to others
- Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions; work as part of a team by collaborating with own and other work units; meet deadlines
- Work under limited supervision; utilize prioritization strategies; accurately process detailed information; be attentive to detail
- Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
- As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 25 pounds
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements effectively and efficiently
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
Required Qualifications:
- 1. High school diploma or a recognized equivalent
- 2. Speak, read, write, and present professionally, analyze, and interpret English written and verbal communications
- 3. Adaptability and understanding of cultural differences while working in a diverse environment
- 4. Hold or obtain a CPR/First Aid Certificate/Utah Food Handler Certificate within 30 days of employment
- 5. Consistently maintained composure and patience in challenging situations
- 6. Flexibility to handle changing work priorities
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1. Job related experience
- 2. Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand
- 3. Ability to lead, guide, and coordinate people and projects
- 4. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records using a variety of technology systems
- 5. Strong problem-solving skills
- 6. Knowledge of child development and ability to identify and adapt directives to students of all ages
Required Skills: CPR/First Aid Certification, Utah Food Handler Certificate, Child Development, Record Keeping, Spanish or Other Language Proficiency
