The Role The Sports Turf Grow-In Specialist is a highly specialized, hands-on role focused on the critical establishment phase of newly constructed athletic fields. This position is responsible for managing the first 60–90 days following seeding or sodding, arguably the most important period in the life cycle of a field. Unlike traditional turf maintenance roles, this position requires a deep understanding of agronomy, soil health, and environmental conditions to ensure optimal turf establishment. The Grow-In Specialist plays a key role in developing strong root systems, achieving uniform density, and delivering a safe, durable, and visually exceptional playing surface that meets professional performance standards. The Grow-In Specialist is responsible for managing irrigation systems, executing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plans, applying fertilizer, and renovating turf.
This role requires a high level of ownership, adaptability, and attention to detail, along with the ability to work independently in dynamic outdoor environments.
What You’ll Do
- Daily Maintenance: Oversee overall turf health including mowing, aerating, topdressing, and moisture management to ensure peak turf performance.
- Agronomic Planning: Develop and execute fertilization and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs; perform regular soil and tissue testing including identifying and treating turf diseases, weeds, and pests.
- Irrigation Oversight: Manage, monitor, and troubleshoot irrigation systems to maintain optimal soil moisture levels; Adjust irrigation schedules based on weather conditions, soil composition, and turf needs; Ensure efficient water usage aligned with sustainability best practices.
- Equipment Care: Operate specialized turf equipment safely and effectively; Calibrate, maintain, and perform basic repairs on equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity
- Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate and detailed records of chemical applications, irrigation schedules, weather conditions, and field performance; Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
- Experience in professional turf maintenance - Golf or Sports Turf, preferred.
- Strong knowledge of turf diseases and irrigation troubleshooting.
- A "details matter" mindset and the ability to lead a team through early mornings and changing weather.
- Demonstrate reliability, responsibility, and cooperation in team settings.

- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing field conditions.

- Willingness to work early mornings, extended hours, and in varying weather conditions.
Requirements
- Ability to pass post-offer, pre-employment substance abuse testing in accordance with SCG Fields’ drug-free workplace policy.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from job sites.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively to various job sites across the US; per diem provided.
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work, including lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs.
