Job Description
Summary: Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation, with teams of specialists focused on cutting-edge work. The R&D Undergraduate Intern will assist in gathering hydrologic field data, perform laboratory experimentation, and support scientific research within a research and development environment.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the gathering of hydrologic field data involving both the operation and upkeep of scientific instrumentation. Additionally, the work will expose you to the application of that data for both reporting and scientific research
- Assist in laboratory experimentation on non-organic/non-radioactive samples utilizing basic and advanced laboratory equipment
- Perform entry-level work within a research and development, science and engineering environment working in conjunction with Sandia staff on projects that involve applying integrated technical judgment which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses
- You will be called upon to support work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying an understanding of engineering and scientific principles
- Assist in the creation and application of scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems
Required Qualifications:
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
- Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Students pursuing one of the following majors: Hydrology, Geochemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Chemistry or Geological Engineering
- General knowledge of technical principles and processes
- Understanding of the use a variety of research tools
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to contribute in a team environment
- General knowledge of project management
- General knowledge and good understanding of a suite of software, including Microsoft Office
- Ability to model behaviors that reflect Sandia's core values
- Ability to do physical work in a desert climate
- Ability to understand and follow safety requirements
