Job Description
Radical Architecture is a small, couple-led architecture and interior design studio based in Pondicherry, operating from a home-based studio. We work across residential, villa, commercial and institutional projects, with direct involvement from design through execution.
We are currently looking for Junior Architects with 1 to 3 years of professional experience to join our couple studio and work closely with our projects. If you are looking for hands-on exposure, direct project involvement and a small studio environment with 20+ years experienced Principal-Architects' mentorship, Radical Architecture could be a good fit.
JOB LOCATION: AT PONDICHERRY (NOT BANGALORE/ NOT CHENNAI/ NOT HYDERABAD). JOB IS AT RADICAL ARCHITECTURE, PONDICHERRY STUDIO
JOB DESCRIPTION & CANDIDATE PROFILE - Architecture Positions 1 to 3 Years Experience
1. POSITIONS & EXPERIENCE BAND:
Education Degree Requirement - B. Arch [Bachelors of Architecture]
Junior Architect - 1 to 2 years - Strong production ability; accurate drawings with limited supervision.
Project Architect - 2 to 3 years - Ownership of project packages, coordination and delivery. Interior working drawings, detailing, materials, joinery and site coordination.
2. PREVIOUS FIRM EXPERIENCE
- Preferred: 1 to 3 years of professional experience in an architecture, architecture-interiors or design-build studio.
- Experience should demonstrate actual project production, not only academic work, rendering or presentation work.
- Residential architecture, villas, bungalows, interiors, institutional projects and small-to-medium scale work are particularly relevant.
- Candidate should be able to identify drawings or project packages personally produced or substantially developed.
- Small/medium practice experience is an advantage because the role requires versatility and direct responsibility.
3. CORE TECHNICAL & SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
- AutoCAD mandatory: plans, sections, elevations, working drawings, annotation, dimensions, layers and sheet organisation.
- SketchUp mandatory: competent architectural modelling and model development.
- Enscape / D5 / Lumion mandatory: usable architectural visualisation and presentation views.
- Photoshop mandatory: presentation boards, image editing and post-production.
- Illustrator / InDesign advantageous.
- Revit / Rhino / 3ds Max advantageous only where genuinely demonstrable.
- Software claims must be validated through a practical test; CV keywords alone are insufficient.
4. ARCHITECTURAL HAND SKILLS
- Read and understand plans, sections, elevations and details.
- Identify missing information, dimensional conflicts, inconsistencies and drawing errors before submission.
- Develop a drawing from a brief rather than mechanically reproduce a reference.
- Basic freehand sketching / diagramming for design and site communication.
- Convert verbal instructions into a clear drawing workflow.
- Understand materials, construction logic, basic building components and practical detailing.
- Maintain drawing standards, file naming, revisions and issue discipline.
5. PROJECT ARCHITECT / HIGHER-END RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independent ownership of assigned projects or packages from brief through drawing development.
- Plan work against deadlines and communicate risks before deadlines are missed.
- Coordinate structural, MEP and specialist consultant inputs.
- Attend and understand site coordination and basic buildability.
- Review own work before submitting it to the Principal Architect.
- Handle multiple projects/workstreams without losing priorities.
- Make reasonable decisions independently and escalate matters genuinely requiring Principal-level direction.
6. SOFT SKILLS & PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE
- Ownership: responsibility for the result, not merely the task.
- Deadline discipline: prioritise and communicate early when a deadline is at risk.
- Comprehension: understand the purpose behind instructions.
- Problem-solving: attempt a reasoned solution before asking for the answer.
- Feedback maturity: accept corrections and convert feedback into improved future output.
- Learning attitude: actively develop technical and architectural competence.
- Communication: clear and professional with principals, consultants, vendors and site teams.
- Reliability: consistent attendance, punctuality and predictable delivery.
7. SITE READINESS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Attend sites when project requirements demand it.
- Work safely in unfinished buildings and normal site conditions using appropriate precautions.
- Travel locally or interstate for meetings, measurements and site coordination when required.
- Maintain professional conduct and safety awareness at construction sites.
8. PONDICHERRY-BASED CANDIDATES
- Reliable daily commuting and punctual attendance.
- Ability to remain available for site visits and project coordination within Pondicherry and nearby locations.
- Understand that the role is a professional studio position, not simply a convenient hometown employment option.
- Willingness to work in a small, direct-reporting practice where responsibility is visible and individual output matters.
- Ready to work across drawing production, coordination, site-related tasks and project support.
9. CANDIDATES FROM OTHER CITIES / STATES
- Must demonstrate genuine and practical willingness to relocate to Pondicherry / Puducherry for an office-based role.
- Relocation, accommodation and commuting arrangements should be independently planned before joining.
- Should not treat Pondicherry merely as a temporary stop while waiting for a preferred-city opportunity.
- Must maintain reliable attendance and participate in site work and project coordination.
- Candidates from Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and other cities will be considered where their skill profile is materially stronger.
10. IDEAL RADICAL ARCHITECTURE CANDIDATE
We are looking for an architect who can think, draw, coordinate and take ownership. The ideal candidate is not expected to know everything at 1 to 3 years of experience, but should demonstrate a strong learning curve, technical discipline, architectural curiosity, accountability and the ability to convert instructions into accurate deliverables. For a small studio, individual contribution is highly visible; reliability and ownership are as important as software proficiency.
