Job Description
Summary: Progress Software is a trusted provider of software that enables customers to develop, deploy, and manage AI-powered applications with agility. They are seeking an entry-level Software Engineer I to join the OpenEdge Core Platform team, where the role involves contributing to the development and maintenance of platform components while gaining hands-on experience in systems-level development and modern development tooling.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of OpenEdge core language and platform components
- Implement well-scoped features, enhancements, and bug fixes under the guidance of senior engineers
- Learn and apply best practices for code quality, testing, and secure development
- Participate in code reviews, incorporating feedback to improve design and implementation skills
- Assist with refactoring and modernization of existing codebases to improve maintainability and performance
- Write and maintain unit tests and functional tests
- Collaborate with product management and QA to understand requirements and expected behavior
- Participate in agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives
- Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot or equivalent) to support coding, debugging, and testing activities
- Apply sound engineering judgment to validate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and performance
- Follow team guidelines for responsible and effective use of AI in software development workflow
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- Strong foundation in programming fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, OOP)
- Experience with at least one systems or backend language (e.g., C, C++, Java, C#, or similar)
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar)
- Familiarity with Git or other version control systems
- Ability to learn new languages, tools, and frameworks quickly
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Internship, co-op, or academic project experience in backend or systems software
- Exposure to compiler concepts, runtimes, databases, or operating systems
- Experience writing automated tests
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix development environments
- Interest in enterprise platforms, developer tooling, or language/runtime design
