Document Intelligence & Applied AI Engineer /… at Procom · Toronto
Job Description
This role will serve as the technical lead for a document-intelligence work stream on a high-visibility initiative that uses OCR, document extraction, and applied AI to modernize a large-scale financial-document processing workflow. The Solution Lead will personally evaluate, configure, and improve the extraction and validation pipeline that turns scanned financial documents into structured, trustworthy business data, and will guide the team on when to use AI, when to use deterministic rules, and when a human needs to be in the loop.
Responsibilities:
- Lead discovery to assess existing document-processing capabilities, document types, layouts, and quality gaps.
- Configure and improve document classification and extraction across varying layouts, versions, languages, and scan quality.
- Decide where deterministic rules, AI-assisted interpretation, and human review each apply, based on accuracy, explainability, and business impact.
- Develop and refine prompts, schemas, and constraints for model-assisted document processing.
- Build a reviewer-validated benchmark dataset and measurable quality metrics that catch regressions before they reach production.
- Define the human-review workflow – what reviewers see, how they correct, approve, reject, or escalate, and how every decision is preserved for audit.
- Partner closely with Platform & Integration Engineering on data contracts, storage, and delivery architecture.
- Translate discovery findings into a prioritized backlog, estimates, risks, and a recommended delivery plan.
Mandatory Skills:
- Proven, hands-on experience delivering OCR, document classification, forms/table extraction, or comparable document-analysis solutions in production.
- Direct experience integrating or evaluating AI/LLM-assisted document processing – prompts, structured outputs, quality controls, and human review.
- Experience building reviewer-validated benchmark datasets, meaningful quality metrics, regression testing, and error analysis.
- Strong Python skills, with the ability to implement or review production-grade services and integrations – not just configure a product through an admin console.
- Ability to translate business review requirements into explainable validation rules and human-review workflows.
- A track record of leading technical discovery, communicating tradeoffs clearly, and staying hands-on through implementation.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- IBM watsonx.ai, watsonx.data, Watson Discovery, Automation Document Processing, Cloud Pak for Business Automation, or Datacap.
- Unstructured.io or a comparable intelligent-document-processing or vision-language document platform.
- Experience in finance, lending, insurance, or another regulated, PII-intensive environment.
- Salesforce, FileNet, or other enterprise content and workflow platforms.
- Experience evaluating document-processing quality across more than one language.
