Job Overview:
Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) – Pipeline
Position Summary
The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for ensuring all pipeline welding activities meet applicable codes, specifications, client requirements, and quality standards. This role performs inspection and verification of welding procedures, welder qualifications, materials, and completed welds throughout pipeline construction projects. The CWI works closely with construction management, quality personnel, and contractors to maintain compliance with project and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect pipeline welding activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, applicable codes, and client requirements.
- Verify welding procedures and ensure adherence to approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Review and validate welder qualifications and certifications prior to production welding.
- Perform visual inspections of welds before, during, and after welding operations.
- Monitor fit-up, preheat, interpass temperature, consumable control, and welding parameters.
- Coordinate and review Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) results including RT, UT, MT, PT, and VT as required.
- Document inspection findings, deficiencies, corrective actions, and daily inspection reports.
- Verify material traceability and ensure proper handling of pipeline materials and welding consumables.
- Conduct audits of contractor quality programs and field welding operations.
- Identify non-conforming conditions and work with project teams to implement corrective actions.
- Maintain inspection records and turnover documentation in accordance with project requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all company safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Participate in client meetings, quality reviews, and project reporting activities as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or vocational training preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of welding inspection experience in pipeline, oil & gas, or heavy industrial construction projects.
- Working knowledge of welding processes including SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, isometrics, welding symbols, procedures, and specifications.
- Experience with API, ASME, and AWS codes and standards applicable to pipeline construction.
- Proficient in inspection documentation and reporting.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience inspecting natural gas, crude oil, transmission, gathering, or distribution pipeline projects.
- API 1104 certification knowledge and inspection experience.
- NACE Coating Inspector certification.
- Additional NDT certifications or experience.
- Previous experience working for pipeline operators, EPC contractors, or inspection service providers.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk long distances on active construction sites.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to climb, kneel, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to pass client-required drug screening, background checks, and site-specific training requirements.
Work Environment
- Field-based position supporting active pipeline construction projects.
- Extended hours, weekends, and rotational schedules may be required based on project needs.
- Frequent travel and overnight stays may be required.
