POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION NAVIGATOR
Department: Education
Term: Full-Time 6-Month Term (Potential to Extend to full time perm)
Hours of Work: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Location: Potlotek First Nation

POSITION OVERVIEW
Potlotek First Nation is seeking a Post-Secondary Education Navigator for a 6-month term to support community members who are pursuing or transitioning into post-secondary education. This position plays an important role in promoting student success, retention, and program completion through guidance, advocacy, and ongoing support.
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the Post-Secondary Coordinator, Amanda Zwicker, to support students, educational institutions, and internal departments. The Navigator will assist with academic planning, funding processes, and addressing personal or systemic challenges that may impact student success. This role is essential in ensuring students are informed of available supports and experience a smooth and successful transition into post-secondary education.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Provide ongoing support to post-secondary students through regular check-ins (in-person, phone, or virtual).
- Assist students with program selection, admissions, and course planning.
- Support students in meeting academic requirements and achieving graduation goals.
- Assist with the completion and submission of enrollment, funding, and program documentation.
- Liaise between students, post-secondary institutions, and Potlotek First Nation.
- Connect students with available supports, including tutoring, housing, financial aid, and counseling services.
- Monitor student progress and identify opportunities for early intervention.
- Conduct exit interviews with students who withdraw and provide recommendations to strengthen supports.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student records and files.
- Share information regarding scholarships, bursaries, and funding opportunities.
- Support high school students transitioning into post-secondary education through presentations and guidance.
- Collaborate with external agencies, institutions, and funding bodies to enhance student success.
- Prepare and provide regular reports and updates to the Post-Secondary Coordinator.
Additional Duties
- Participate in education planning and program development initiatives.
- Assist with community outreach and promotion of education programs and opportunities.
- Attend meetings, training sessions, and workshops as required.
- Support departmental initiatives and special projects.
- Promote education and lifelong learning within the community.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Education, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field.
- Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.
- Experience working with students or within post-secondary or education environments.
- Strong understanding of post-secondary systems, funding processes, and student supports.
- Knowledge of Mi’kmaq culture, community, and language is considered an asset.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Current Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Primarily office-based with travel required to educational institutions and community events.
- Frequent interaction with students and families, including sensitive or complex situations.
- Flexibility in work hours may be required to meet student needs.
- High level of professionalism and confidentiality required at all times.
