Job Description
Summary: Port Houston is committed to excellence and offers a diverse, inclusive work environment. The intern will engage in various safety-related responsibilities to gain knowledge and contribute to the development and management of safety systems.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in safety coordination duties in such areas as safety committees, preplanning meetings, and toolbox meetings, safety trainings and orientations
- Assist in review or development of safety programs, JHAs, and/or risk assessments for completeness and compliance with PHA policies and procedures
- Assist in promoting safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with all State, Federal and Local regulations; learn the importance and consequences of reporting and not reporting violation or unsafe practice
- Assist the Safety team in weekly meetings and training as needed; document those meetings under direction of supervision
- Assist in creation or updating of safety training materials, ensuring they are current, engaging, and effective
- Assist Safety team with conducting site and work area inspections and job hazard analysis, conducting risk assessments and identifying potential hazards in the workplace. This could involve collaboration with different departments to address and mitigate risks
- Maintain safety records, including training records, meetings, logs, and incident investigations
- Collaborate using basic data analysis skills to interpret safety-related metrics and trends, contributing to the development of proactive safety measures
- Opportunities to collaborate with external safety experts or consultants, gaining insights and knowledge from industry professionals

- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
- Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
- Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship
- Students must be able to work throughout the established ten to twelve-week (10-12) program dates
- Demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills
- Demonstrates attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to prepare business cases and explain and/or support the recommended course of action
- Ability to self-manage work expectations
- Ability to work as an individual contributor and/or within a team
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to business partners and understand their expectations and requirements
- Strong interpersonal and time management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Willingness to learn
- Punctuality is key
- Understanding of and readiness to actively participate in workplace safety audits, and behavior-based safety observations
- Organizational skills for maintaining accurate and comprehensive safety records
- Ability to collaborate effectively within the Safety team and across different departments, fostering a culture of safety throughout the organization
- Consistently arrives on time for work, meetings, and other commitments
- Takes initiative and approaches tasks with dedication and diligence
- Maintains a positive attitude in the workplace and works well in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:
- 2027/2028 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
- A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
