Job Description
Summary: Planned Systems International (PSI) is an Enterprise IT services company focused on delivering innovative software solutions for Federal Government organizations. They are seeking a Drone Systems Engineering Intern to support the development of a next-generation modular drone system, providing hands-on experience in mechanical and electrical subsystem design, rapid prototyping, and compliance research.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the mechanical and/or electrical subsystem design using CAD or PCB tools (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, KiCAD, etc.)
- Support rapid prototyping efforts (e.g., 3D printing, breadboarding, sensor integration)
- Participate in system integration and bench testing, including hardware debug and sensor calibration
- Contribute to documentation efforts, including design logs, test procedures, and BOM tracking
- Collaborate in agile development meetings and contribute to sprint tasks
- Conduct research on FAA/regulatory compliance topics as they relate to small UAVs
Required Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a college undergraduate program
- Basic experience with mechanical or electrical CAD tools
- Exposure to embedded systems or programming (e.g., Arduino, STM32, ESP32)
- Familiarity with common communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C)
- Knowledge of Python, MATLAB, or C/C++ is a plus
- Interest in drones, autonomous systems, and rapid hardware development
- Must have successfully completed one year of an accredited university/college with salient courseware to support meaningful contributions to systems engineering requirements for project
Preferred Qualifications:
- Majors such as Mechanical Engineering are preferred
