Job Description
Summary: Pivotal is the leader in the emerging market of electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. They are seeking an R&D Mechanical Technician who will be responsible for fabricating prototype components, manufacturing lightweight structures, and integrating mechanical and electrical systems for innovative aircraft designs.
Responsibilities:
- Fabricate prototype components using 3D printing, machining, and rapid prototyping techniques
- Manufacture and repair lightweight structures using wet layup composites (fiberglass, carbon fiber, Kevlar, etc.)
- Build and maintain jigs, molds, and fixtures for prototype assembly and rework
- Assemble and integrate mechanical, electrical, structural, and propulsion systems including electric motors, internal combustion (gasoline) engines, and hybrid powertrains
- Conduct system-level integration and troubleshooting—diagnosing electrical, fuel, or mechanical issues during vehicle bring-up and testing
- Support engine installation, cooling, exhaust, and fuel system plumbing
- Collaborate closely with engineers across Aeromechanical, Electrical, and Systems disciplines to ensure designs are manufacturable and test-ready
- Provide feedback to design engineers and contribute to design-for-assembly and design-for-maintenance improvements
- Maintain an organized, safe, and efficient prototype workshop environment
Required Qualifications:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent hands-on technical experience
- Strong proficiency with hand tools, fabrication equipment, adhesives, cutting, bonding, and assembly processes
- Proficiency with 3D printing (FDM, SLA, or similar) and finishing techniques
- Practical experience in composite layup, trimming, and structural bonding
- Hands-on experience with internal combustion engines, including assembly, integration, and testing
- Familiarity with electric propulsion systems (motors, ESCs, wiring, sensors, or BMS integration)
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced prototyping and test environment, supporting rapid iteration cycles
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in aerospace, automotive, UAV, or eVTOL prototype builds
- Working knowledge of adhesives, bonded structures, lightweight materials, and engine-to-electric hybrid integration
- Familiarity with CAD tools (CATIA, NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent)
- Experience with instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition during system testing
- Understanding of AS9100 or ISO9001 quality practices for prototype fabrication
