Job Summary
The Mortgage Underwriter responsibilities are:
- Reviews procedures to maximize department resources, as well as identifying and making appropriate changes and improvements that can enhance the overall performance of the department.
- Reviews and underwrites residential mortgage applications originated by Mortgage Loan Officers.
- Approves or denies mortgage loans.
- Assures compliance with investor and/or bank guidelines.
- Underwrite loans of greater complexity, included but not limited to jumbos, conventional, FHA, VA and USDA and investor niche products.
The employee will support the bank's strategic goals, vision, mission, core values, service standards and service philosophy in actions, words and deeds.
Skills, Knowledge, Talents
Education
- Mortgage operations experience at a financial institution preferred.
- 5-8 years mortgage underwriting experience required.
Required Skills & Talents
- Must have a basic knowledge of the bank's products and services. Must have a willingness to serve. Must be able to collect, research, and analyze information skillfully.
- Must be a self-starter, a creative thinker, flexible, eager, nurturing, open to change and exhibit good judgment. Must be a leader by example, attentive to detail, work well with others and responsive to supervisory guidance. Must have organizational, planning and problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to identify and interpret trends in financial data.
- Must have a working knowledge of compliance guidelines for the bank and the industry. Must have ability to multi-task and thrive in a fast paced and high-volume environment.
- Must be able to function efficiently in a network environment and have a working knowledge of Microsoft
- Office and SharePoint.
- Must be able to function efficiently on a general business level of math, possess general accounting knowledge
- Project a professional image by adhering to guidelines in the employee handbook. Analytical/Critical thinking-Be able to anticipate problems and resolve early issues.
- Detailed oriented with ability to set goals, meet objectives, take initiative and complete tasks within deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Flexible/Adaptable.
- Must be able to handle a high volume of loans.
- Ability to work overtime as work volume or staffing issues dictates. Broad understanding of residential mortgage/real estate loan closings.
- Must be able to read credit reports and other tools necessary to accomplish position responsibilities. Must know loan documentation necessary for position responsibilities.
- Must have knowledge of the following lending regulations: Fair Debt Collections Act; Regulation B: Equal Credit Opportunity Act; Regulation C: Home Mortgage Disclosure; Regulation Z: Truth in Lending; HMDA; RESPA: Real Estate Settlement Procedures; Bank Secrecy
- Must have a working knowledge of compliance guidelines for the bank and the industry. Broad, general knowledge of investment and insurance products.
- Will train to understand loan and commitment letters
