Osler is seeking a highly developed and results-oriented Legal Counsel to join its Legal Affairs team. In alignment with Osler’s strategic direction, the Legal Counsel will provide a full spectrum of legal services across the hospital and support the team in maintaining and monitoring legal obligations of the hospital’s administrative and clinical departments with a focus on corporate/commercial work and health law. The successful candidate must possess sound judgment and highly analytical skills combined with a practical, solutions oriented and client centered approach. In addition, highly developed communication and research skills, demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in teams, including demonstrated consensus building skills and excellent interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will also support Osler’s Privacy team on privacy issues and freedom of information requests from a legal perspective.
The successful candidate will report to the Vice President, Legal Affairs and General Counsel and is often the first point of contact for Managers, Directors and staff on a variety of legal issues.
Accountabilities:
Drafts, negotiates and reviews contract and commercial transactional and related documents with a focus on MOU's, collaboration agreements, and other corporate/commercial matters, including procurements, finance, construction, leasing, information technology and privacy related agreements
Works closely with directors and managers to support their contract requirements with vendors, other hospitals and partners
Consults with/refers to internal/external resources as required (including government officials, professional regulatory bodies, external counsel, coroners, police, etc.)
Advises staff and management on other legal matters, including contract law, administrative law, corporate/commercial law, health law and other issues that arise
Identifies areas of potential legal and statutory risks, determines acceptable levels of risk, and makes recommendations to ensure clients take appropriate measures to manage risk in their contractual and other arrangements
Develops policies and procedures, including identifying and addressing legal risks and compliance considerations
Participate in working groups across the hospital, providing legal input and support as required
Managers implementation of Olser's Disclosing Information to Police Policy, including providing training to Olser's clinical team members
Leads Osler's legislative compliance program, working directly with various Osler's departments, and summarizing Olser's compliance for reporting to the Executive Team and Board
Identifies areas of potential legal and statutory risk
Monitors legislative and regulatory developments impacting the healthcare sector and advise on implications for the hospital
Provides in-service training to staff on relevant and changing legal and regulatory matters
Assists with the maintenance of the organization’s legislative registrar
qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in law or recognized equivalent required
Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario required
Certificate in Health law or Privacy Law preferred
Minimum three (3) years of practical related experience as in-house counsel or leading law firm (ideally based in a health law context)
Preference for candidates who have worked within a health care organization or a similar public sector entity
Demonstrated ability to interact positively and work cooperatively with colleagues, staff and effectively as part of a team
Proven collaborative planning skills in a fast-paced environment
Knowledge of the role of policies, procedures and protocols
Ability to draft and negotiate agreements independently
Knowledge of Privacy laws in Ontario
High proficiency of applicable legislation in variety of areas of law
Fairness, openness, patience and a high level of integrity
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required; ability to translate complex regulatory standards into material that can be understood by a functionally diverse audience
Excellent customer service, interpersonal, negotiation and diplomacy skills while being assertive and proactive
Excellent organizational and time management skills required to handle competing priorities/deadlines
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with an attention to detail
Eagerness to learn new areas and work with little supervision
Experience in a health care setting strongly preferred; experience in a multi-site facility preferred
Experience in developing and sustaining effective and collaborative professional working relationships and partnerships
Experience with regulatory and legal research preferred

Annual Salary:
Minimum: $109,434.00
Maximum: $136,792.50
