Job Summary:

Critical thinking skills and the ability to assist the nurse in caring for patients primarily in Med/Surg; floats to Emergency Department as ED Tech; assist in OB as needed. Supports hospital operations by maintaining the nursing station; gathering and providing information to professional staff, patients, and their families; providing clerical services. Also provides some direct patient care as directed by the Shift Supervisor and/or Staff Nurse.

Responsibilities include:

HUC: Acts as the central contact person for the nursing units (Med Surg, ED and OB); performs transcription, clerical, and reception duties. Critical thinking and computer skills required; working knowledge of office equipment including, but not limited to, fax machines, copy machines, printers, and computers. All other duties assigned within the scope of HUC practice.

CNA: Assists the nurse to carry out the nursing process to deliver the highest quality nursing care. As a patient advocate, he/she coordinates the care of the patient through collaboration with the nursing team. The CNA provides daily patient care, activities, and other tasks as delegated by the nursing staff. He/she monitors and interacts frequently with all patient service departments; utilizes interdisciplinary input to plan, implement and evaluate care. All other duties assigned within the scope of CNA practice.

Physical Requirements for the Role:

• Heavy Lifting & Transferring: Ability to lift at least 50 lbs independently or with assistance, including moving patients from beds to wheelchairs, toilets, or stretchers.
• Stamina & Mobility: Standing and walking for 8-12 hour shifts, with frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
• Physical Strength: Strong upper body and back muscles to support patients, reposition them in bed, and assist with daily living activities.
• Manual Dexterity: High level of dexterity for tasks like taking blood pressure, changing bandages, feeding, and grooming.
• Sensory Abilities: Acute vision (including depth perception and close/distance vision) and hearing to monitor patient safety, detect changes in condition, and understand instructions.

Qualifications:

• CNA with current Wisconsin Certification or the ability to obtain.
• BLS certified.
• Prefer 1 year Med/Surg or hospital experience.
• Exemplary telephone etiquette, good interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities.
• High level of attention to detail Medical terminology and keyboarding/word processing skills

The med/surg unit is a fast-paced, high-acuity environment with high emotional intensity where you will care for patients with diverse, complex, and rapidly changing conditions. The workload can be heavy, so we focus on creating a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented environment to ensure patient centered care. There is the potential for exposure to infectious patients, harmful physical agents, and hazardous or toxic substances.
