Senior .NET Software Engineer at Open… · London…
Job Description
Senior .NET Software Engineer
Up to £70,000, depending on experience · Full-time, permanent
London · Office-based, 5 days per week
About Us
We're an established UK insurance broker, 17 years in, and our growth has been driven by the technology we've built. We've got a clear growth plan and we're expanding into new insurance markets.
Our .NET team maintains a broad estate of applications hosted on AWS, working alongside a separate front-end team. As we scale, that team needs to get stronger.
The Role
We're hiring our second senior engineer to raise the standard of how our team builds software, by developing the people in it and strengthening the engineering practices around it.
What You Would Be Doing
Our engineering team is based in India: one senior engineer plus a mix of mid-level and junior developers. They're capable, and they'd get noticeably better with a strong senior engineer investing in them day to day.
That's the job. You'd be the senior technical voice in UK hours, which in practice means:
- Reviewing pull requests properly, with feedback that teaches rather than just approves
- Coaching mid-level engineers into taking first-pass reviews and owning features end to end
- Embedding test-driven development across an estate where automated coverage is currently patchy
- Taking day-to-day technical unblocking off the Engineering Manager
Alongside that you'd be hands-on with senior delivery work: API design, the harder refactors, and the pieces where experience matters.
Longer term, we want to build an agentic AI development workflow on top of solid test coverage, with agents doing first-pass review and code generation against tests that act as the specification. We're not expecting you to have done that already. We are expecting someone curious enough to want to build it with us.
Working Arrangements
You would be the only software engineer in our London office. The team works across UK and Indian hours, with a good overlap each day. The people around you day to day are commercial, operations and IT infrastructure, and you'll work closely with them, but not on code.
Most of your working relationships happen over calls and code review rather than across a desk, so the role suits someone comfortable working independently and confident picking up the phone rather than waiting to be asked.
It also means we care as much about how you communicate as what you know.
What We're Looking For
- Strong commercial C# and .NET: web APIs, background services, message brokers
- Real test-driven development experience, used to shape design rather than written afterwards to hit a coverage number
- A track record of making other engineers better: mentoring, code review culture, or a practice you introduced that stuck after you moved on
- Someone who starts conversations. You'll often be the person who spots the problem and has to raise it without being asked
- Comfortable working with and coaching a remote team across time zones
- SQL Server, and ideally PostgreSQL: schema design and performance
- AWS, and CI/CD pipelines (we use TeamCity and Octopus Deploy)
Nice To Have
Event-driven architectures, monitoring and alerting tooling, experience running AI coding agents against pull requests, and any exposure to insurance or another regulated industry.
What We Offer
- Up to £70,000 depending on experience
- 28 days' holiday including bank holidays, rising to 33 with tenure (20 days' own allowance plus 8 bank holidays, with one day added per year of service up to five years)
- Workplace pension: 3% employer contribution, 5% employee, on qualifying earnings
- Death in service cover of £50,000, after three months' service
- Employee Assistance Programme via Aviva after three months, including online GP access and wellbeing helplines
- A genuinely broad estate to work across, and real influence over how a growing engineering team works
How We Hire
Our process includes a working session with the engineers you'd be supporting, so you can see who you'd be working with before you decide.
Pay: Up to £70,000.00 per year
