Job Description
Summary: NV5 is a provider of engineering and consulting services to public and private sector clients. The Geomatics Intern supports the Geomatics team with field, office, and project support activities related to land surveying, mapping, data collection, and geospatial production.
Responsibilities:
- Assist field crews with boundary, topographic, utility, construction, and control surveys
- Support setup and operation of survey equipment, including GPS/GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, data collectors, levels, and other field instruments
- Help collect, organize, and verify field data under the direction of survey crew chiefs or field leads
- Assist with field notes, photographs, sketches, measurements, and daily documentation
- Support safe field operations by following company safety standards, traffic control requirements, and job-specific work plans
- Assist with processing field survey data for use in CAD, GIS, and mapping deliverables
- Support drafting and mapping tasks using software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS, Trimble Business Center, or similar platforms
- Help prepare base maps, exhibits, survey figures, plan sheets, and project documentation
- Assist with organizing project files, survey records, control data, field notes, and deliverable packages
- Perform basic quality control checks on survey data, drawings, and project information
- Assist with data management and production workflows related to UAV imagery, LiDAR, point clouds, orthomosaics, and terrain models
- Support coordination between survey, UAV, GIS, and office production teams
- Help review and organize geospatial datasets for completeness and consistency
- Assist with preparing exhibits, maps, and technical support materials for internal teams and clients
- Support project managers and technical staff with research, documentation, data entry, and tracking
- Assist with project setup, file organization, meeting notes, and internal coordination
- Help maintain logs, trackers, and project records as needed
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and project reviews
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a degree or certificate program in surveying/geomatics, civil engineering, geography, GIS/geospatial science, construction management, environmental science, aviation/UAV technology, or a related technical field
- Strong interest in land surveying, mapping, geospatial technology, infrastructure, utilities, or field-based technical work
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to follow instructions, ask questions, and work effectively in a team environment
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn technical workflows
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions when assigned to field activities
- Valid driver's license preferred, depending on assignment and location
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework or experience with land surveying, CAD, GIS, GPS/GNSS, remote sensing, photogrammetry, or LiDAR
- Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS, Trimble Business Center, Pix4D, Leica, TopoDOT, or similar software
- Interest in pursuing a career as a Professional Land Surveyor, Survey Technician, GIS Analyst, UAV Technician, or Geomatics professional
- Prior internship, field, construction, engineering, mapping, or technical production experience
- FAA Part 107 certification or interest in UAV operations is a plus, but not required
- Ability to read basic plans, maps, construction drawings, or survey exhibits
