Job Description
Summary: NOV is seeking a mechanical engineering intern to support the modernization of a coil tubing dynamometer system used to test downhole motors. The intern will work on developing a structured engineering definition package and gain hands-on experience with fluid systems and multidisciplinary engineering projects.
Responsibilities:
- Develop a system overview and functional breakdown of the existing CT dyno, identifying major subsystems and how they interact
- Create an updated Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) using current company standards
- Generate a high-level mechanical layout (general arrangement) showing major components and flow paths
- Define an instrumentation and I/O list, including key measurements (flow, pressure, temperature, torque, speed) and signal types
- Support development of a controls concept, including block diagrams of control loops and system interactions
- Perform a gap analysis to identify missing information, risks, and areas requiring redesign or clarification
- Provide modernization recommendations for updating the system using current controls and data acquisition standards (e.g., PLC-based architecture)
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Familiarity with fluid systems and rotating equipment
- Understanding of controls, instrumentation, and data acquisition concepts
- Ability to create Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
- Experience with system integration and multidisciplinary engineering projects
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous internship or project experience in mechanical engineering
- Knowledge of PLC-based architecture
- Experience with CAD software for mechanical layout design
