LIBRARY ASSISTANT I
PT 20 Hrs · Location: New Britain, CT, US
Title/Classification: Library Assistant I – Circulation
Reports to: Head of Circulation Services
Starting Salary: $16.94 per hour
Schedule: Part-time, 20-hour, position, including at least one evening per week and alternating Saturdays
Position Summary: Library Assistant I performs a wide range of on-desk entry-level clerical and manual library functions. Work involves frequent patron contact; requires use of automated library systems for various clerical tasks. As assigned, performs off-desk duties.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED and experience in a library or school library environment. Customer service experience and strong computer/technology skills required.
Preferred qualification is language proficiency particularly in Polish or Spanish.
Responsibilities:
Performs assigned duties according to established procedures. Specific responsibilities, including but not limited to:
• Performs clerical or technical tasks in assigned unit.
• Greets visitors.
• Performs circulation desk tasks; performs database duties as necessary.
• Assists patrons with equipment such as photocopier, fax machine and scanner.
• Responds to patron questions and requests for assistance, referring more complex inquiries to the appropriate staff member as needed.
• Answers and directs incoming telephone calls, providing information or routing calls to the appropriate staff member.
• Enforces rules regarding Library procedures.
• Retrieves materials for patrons or other staff.
• Attends meetings and/or workshops as assigned.
• Performs a variety of circulation duties, including checking out, renewing, checking in, and returning library materials; collecting payments; registering patrons; completing opening and closing procedures; inspecting materials for damage and recording all actions in the library database.
• Maintains materials by reading shelves, shifting, sorting, shelving, organizing materials in their proper sequence.
• May also be responsible for one or more of the following functions:
• Lost and found
• Processing returned mail
• Processing overdue and billing notices
• Performs off-desk duties as assigned.
