Job Description
Summary: The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a Forester I - Service Forester to provide professional oversight and expertise in forest management across multiple counties in North Carolina. The role involves collecting and analyzing forest data, writing management plans for landowners, and conducting environmental compliance inspections, as well as responding to emergencies such as wildland fires.
Responsibilities:
- Collecting and analyzing forest data to provide technical advice to landowners
- Writing management plans for non-industrial private forest landowners
- Interacts with consulting foresters, as well as other professional state and local government land managers for forestry related technical assistance
- Conducting environmental compliance inspections for regulations related to forestry activities
- Responds in times of emergency such as wildland fires and natural disasters
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution; or registered by the North Carolina Board of Registration for Foresters; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of forest management
- Knowledge of collecting and analyzing forestry data
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats
- Ability to be self-motivated, a team player, and able to remain calm under stress
- Necessary Special Requirement: Those not registered at the time of hire must obtain registration as a Forester from the NC Board of Registration for Foresters within two years of employment
