Job Description
Summary: The Montana Department of Transportation is seeking an Attorney 1 to join the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance (CSI) to focus on prosecuting criminal and administrative fraud cases. The role involves managing legal cases, collaborating with partners, and providing legal advice to the agency.
Responsibilities:
- Manage cases from referral through final judgment, including drafting pleadings and briefs, and representing CSI at trial
- Prosecute administrative actions related to insurance and securities fraud and then represent CSI in potential appeals
- Represent CSI in civil litigation
- Collaborate with state and federal partners to prosecute complex white-collar criminal cases
- Exercise meaningful autonomy in your casework, supported by a team that values collegiality, excellence, and public service
- Provide advice to CSI’s management related to insurance and securities cases
Required Qualifications:
- A Juris Doctor degree
- 1 to 2 years of job-related work experience
- Exceptional legal research and writing skills
- The ability to work independently while meeting deadlines
- Membership in good standing in the State Bar of Montana, or the ability to become a member by an agreed-upon date. Individuals with 5 years of practice in another state may be able to apply for admission 'on motion' to the Montana Bar
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 or more years of experience, including experience as lead counsel at trial
- Experience with insurance or securities law
- A law school transcript
