Summary
PURPOSE: To support patients and staff in Outpatient Recovery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Transport patients from PACU when discharged to the cafeteria, outpatient
pharmacy, etc. when needed.
Act as a guide for patients and families assisting in giving directions. Provide drinks and snacks with the RN’s ok to patients. Get wheelchairs when necessary. Assist in finding patient’s family members. Pick up orders from dietary, such as straws, crackers when necessary. Run errands, such as, getting copies made, linen bags when running low. Help answer phones. Enter transport tickets into computer at the nurse’s request. Enter computer request for valet call ahead. Makes sure wheelchairs are wiped down and returned to the alcove located on the floor where volunteer is assigned. Communicates with staff to incorporate this duty into the daily tasks. Clean and fill charts. Wipe down high-touch areas. Pick up lunches from cafeteria for observation patients, and place in the OBS unit refrigerator Restock dietary supplies. Return menu to dietary. Put together charts for procedure suite surgery patients
GENERAL VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand for extended periods of time Ability to lift up to 20lbs. Must be able to comprehend and communicate oral and written instructions in English. Have good interpersonal skills and communicate clearly and directly. Be mature, dependable and reliable. Maintain a good attitude. Be caring, empathetic and non-judgmental. Maintain weekly attendance.
RESTRICTIONS, LIMITS AND BOUNDARIES:
The volunteer is required to keep his/her activities within the defined scope of this service guideline. It is furthermore the responsibility of the volunteer to decline a request by a staff member or patient at any time the volunteer is physically or emotionally unprepared or unqualified to perform the service, or if the volunteer is requested to perform duties outside the realm of the service guideline.
The volunteer is supervised by the department staff. All patient-related activities performed by volunteers must be supervised and approved by the professional staff who retains ultimate responsibility for the patient’s treatment and care.
Volunteers may not perform any patient related activities that require licensure or educational degrees even if the volunteer has those credentials. The key issue is that the volunteer is not employed by the clinic and, therefore, for liability, risk management and safety reasons must not exceed the limits and boundaries of these specified volunteer duties.
Regardless of service area, these restrictions apply to all volunteers
Volunteers may NOT:
Lift over 20 lbs. Transport patients on stretchers Transport patients with running IV’s `Escort patients for cigarette/smoking breaks Assist patients getting in/out of hospital bed Feed patients with swallowing difficulties Strip soiled linens off beds (linens with blood or bodily fluids) Mix, serve, and handle contrast solutions or any other function requiring a license Handle bio-hazardous waste such as blood, body fluids, or sharp containers Ride elevators during a Code Red Divulge any confidential information. Acknowledge any information about patients. (Please refer information requests to the department staff.) Read or write on patient charts or other confidential documents. Witness legal documents. Make any public comments regarding patient’s treatment plan or care and/or clinic caregivers. (Direct questions or concerns directly to the department supervisor and/or the Volunteer Services Office in private to insure confidentiality.) Make inquiries to anyone about their personal belief systems such as religious preferences, political affiliations and other sensitive issues that may be regarded as intrusive. Give patients food or beverages without prior approval from the department staff caring for that patient. Volunteer when ill or contagious as directed in the Volunteer Services Infection Control Policy.
