About the opportunity

We are pleased to offer a part-time funded Master of Nursing (Research) for an enthusiastic candidate wanting to lead clinical studies and gain skills in neonatal nursing research.

This position is offered jointly through Mercy Perinatal (Prof Brett Manley & Dr Shiraz Badurdeen), La Trobe (Prof Chris East), and the Neonatal Nursing Leadership Team at the Mercy Hospital for Women.

The successful candidate will support the running of a randomised controlled trial that is aimed at improving intubation safety. Specifically, the trial will test whether the application of nasal prong oxygen (low flow) during laryngoscopy increases first intubation success without dangerous desaturation or bradycardia for preterm and term infants. Additional studies can be built around this trial based on the candidate's interests, for example using implementation science, human factors, or novel approaches to improve equitable participation in trials.

The position would comprise fractional EFT allocations across research nursing, clinical nursing, and student activities, collectively forming a full‑time equivalent appointment.

What you’ll bring

You’re resilient, compassionate and have a whole lot of heart. Most importantly, you are committed to delivering exceptional patient-centred care.

To thrive in this role, you will have:

• Excellent clinical, time management, organisational and communication skills, with the ability to adapt and problem solve.
• A compassionate, flexible and positive approach to effective patient care and management.
• The ability to nurture friendly, respectful relationships and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
• Demonstrated interest in clinical research and evidence-based practice, with the ability to contribute to high-quality research activities and outcomes.
• Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to balance competing clinical, research and academic priorities.
• A proactive and self-directed approach to learning, research and professional development.

You will also be required to provide evidence of, or in the process of obtaining:

• A current Police Record Check and Working with Children Check.
• Proof of current influenza vaccination and other vaccination status consistent with public health orders.
• Minimum academic requirement is a Bachelor’s (Honours) degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years with a weighted average mark of 70 (H2A) or above.
• Where an applicant does not meet the normal academic entry requirements, an application may be made for admission on equity or alternative entry grounds.
• Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
• Current Neonatal Nursing experience.
